My grandmother's cousin and her family moved to Australia from Austria in the 1930s to flee the Nazis, so she and her immediate family were Austrian Australians. Lots of schnitzel on the barbie and such.

But, he used to mention a National holiday that was like the 4th of July, Memorial Day (and maybe something else) all rolled up into one.

Well, Anzac Day (25th April) is closest to Memorial Day.
That's when the forces march and are venerated etc.
Aussie's don't have an equivalent to 4th of July because we aren't Independent yet.
(We were still attached to Britain's tit, not sure what we're sucking now we have a King, tho.)
