They haven't.

Pretty sure the answer is selling miles to Citibank and Barclay's for credit card rewards.

Which I greatly appreciate. Between the travel for work and the credit card miles I get to fly anywhere for almost free.

I wish my bank was partnered with American, they went United and I don't fly United.  They USED to be partnered with American.

That being said, there are a lot of shiatty airlines, and American is the least shiatty for the reasons I fly with them (space).  I can't comment on the Economy cabin, because I don't fit there (height).  I'm already typically paying $1000+ for flights because of my height.  All airlines have a lot of things to improve but they cater to the types of folks who think that being 5'4" means you need an exit row.
