I swore Puf Puf was real but in the one Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest I was playing then, it was only a thing under rare circumstance.  I could never prove that it happened.

I can never prove now that it happened and I don't know those people anymore.  I have proof now that it's real and across several DW/DQ games and more, but it does no good to be right, they'll always think I'm wrong.

Useless.  Useless the entire time.  One of the guys from Contra is named Lance.

Back in the '90s, a friend and I ran across a fan-made game that was sort of a sequel to the classic Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

We desperately wanted to play the game...so much so that we didn't care that it was in German.

IIRC, we sat on the floor by his computer, poring over a German-English section of his family's enormous hardcover Random House dictionary (my family had the same edition) to translate, well, whatever we could.

Thanks to these efforts, I have never forgotten that "fackel" is the German word for torch.

In world 8-1 of Mario 3 if you hop in the first sand pit it's a shortcut.

When I was 16ish I was playing and my sister asked me what was down there and I said death and hopped in. Had enough lives to cover it so didn't care. Surprise! First secret I ever found in a game on my own.

The remnants of "Middle Earth Online" are west of Michel Delving in LotRO. Behind in the cliffs in an infinite matrix of flat green terrain.

In the Future "sky maps" from Fall Guys, there is a city under the clouds that you can fall to if the game does not catch you with a respawn.

In Gauntlet, four-player version, (1) by cooperating on strategy and tactics, (2) by utilizing each character's unique powers effectively (switching between players if fatigue makes it necessary), and (3) by ignoring individual point score, a well-seasoned team of players can literally play the game for eight hours on four quarters (total). TEAMWORK, BIOTCHES!

In Mega Man 2, when fighting Airman, wait till he leaps across the room, and stay behind him on the edge of the screen, then wait till he launches his air tornadoes and purposefully walk into him. You will usually teleport to a glitchy version of the second Dr Wily stage. You won't have Item-2 yet, because you get it when you beat Airman, which you didn't do, so you'll have to get across the spike pit using Item-1 or Item-3. If you get to the end of the stage, the final boss is missing so you can't beat the stage.

In Solar Jetman, there are actually a nearly infinite number of worlds, which you can get to by changing some random letters in your password. You'll probably have to try a bunch of changes before you find a valid one. Most of the worlds are glitchy.

In Metroid, you can bomb your way up to the top of the elevator shafts by timing your bombs correctly. The only thing up there is a solid ceiling. You can also bomb your way into Tourian before defeating Kraid and Ridley this way, if the lava doesn't kill you first.

In one of the Nascar games on the PS1, maybe '98, if you turned on realistic damage and drove in reverse for a few laps you would almost guarantee a win.

The AI would swerve so wide they'd hit the wall and knock themselves out of the race.

Choose Donnie for level 1. When you fight Bebop, go back to the top of the platform and just keep attacking down. He can't touch you.

Coleco deliberately made their Donkey Kong cartridge port for Atari worse than their Donkey Kong cartridge port for Colecovision, just to make the Atari look bad by comparison.

Finally just gave up playing completely after a few thousand hours

1 - GTA: San Andreas ( PS2)

There is a missing polygon of water texture in the ocean south of the southwest landmass, right up against the cliff face.

If you swim over to it, you'll drop to the bottom of the ocean (must have max health to survive it) with no breath meter or swimming rules.

Now you can walk around, firing up at boats and attracting police who just drive off into the water and die.

2 - Super Mario Bros 2

In Subcon, if you can grab a mushroom and hit exit on the door right as Subcon time is ending, you can force the Subcon Mario Theme to play throughout the rest of the stage.

Garza, my namesake in Fallout 3, occasionally leaves the safety of the Rivet City aircraft carrier to try to sleep in the supermutants' encampment nearby. If he can make it into their camp alive, they'll actually leave him alone, as they're coded to occasionally hold a human hostage there. Most of the time, though, they'll catch Garza coming or going to the camp, and they'll tear him to pieces.

In MISER!, you won't see the trapdoor to the dungeon if you TAKE the RUG.  The code only reveals the trapdoor to the dungeon if you KICK the RUG.

On Dirge of Cerberus, when you fight the Dragonfly PT, you can shoot a gargoyle to make it land, then jump on its head and ride it around the tower.

Also, everyone thinks Fuzz Busters in Super Castlevania IV are invincible.  They aren't.

On NHLPA hockey '93 or '94 on the SNES during the 2nd period of any game where you are shooting down the ice. With the puck, skate your guy round the back of the net along the wall from right to left. Often the opponent goal tender would get stuck on the right hand post leaving you an easy shot.

IIRC, in Starflight, Endurium is the Ancients and you've been using them as fuel.

In Parsec on the TI-99/4A, the enemy ships are named after the game programmers.

If you play a lot of video games as a teenager, girls will think you're lame and not want to make out with you, even when playing spin-the-bottle.

cretinbob: Any video game that has any randomization is descended from Dungeons and Dragons.

You sound like WotC's legal team.

Dungeons and Dragons was launched in 1974.

Spacewar! was programmed in 1962 and included randomization in the form of a "panic button" that would move a player's ship to a random location on screen.

Any game using dice or cards is subject to randomization, and they pre-date D&D by a few millennia.  D&D wasn't the first game to use randomization, nor is it the basis for all others.

D&D wasn't even the first game to use randomization in the specific way it does, as most of the core rules for D&D were taken from an earlier game in 1971 called Chainmail.

/And there's a small batch of my own useless facts.

The original Fallout demo (included on things like the PC Gamer CD) was an homage to Red Harvest/Yojimbo/A Fistful of Dollars, whereby you played a lone outsider playing two warring gangs against each other in order to liberate a town.  It did a nice job of demonstrating the freedom of choice of the world, where you could choose to side with either gang or side with the townspeople and play them against each other to kill each other.  This content was not in the final game.

It's slower if you're a good speedrunner, easier for a casual player.
