DS9 is the best Trek (imho) mostly because of the less savory characters. Quark and Garak were both so well written and acted.

Dax had several lifetimes under her belt. Even Sisco had a chip on his shoulder towards Picard. About the only vanilla generic star fleet character on the show was O'Brien

Yeah, they gave him a lot of episodes to flex his chops.  It was a nice way to balance his witty one-liners in the non-torture episodes.
