Figures. No, it couldn't be a sex joke, or trash talking the other team, or a comment about a cheerleader.

Same here but in my case it was a gal who was fired for swearing in the control room (I think she let out a single expletive). She was clearly not on air and the mic was not hot...but the rule was no swearing in the control room and the station took it VERY seriously.

When I was in college, the on-call RAs had walkie talkies that were monitored by the police dispatch.  They frequently had problems and were probably completely superfluous (anything that remotely requires privacy in the least can't go over the walkie talkies and you could always just call dispatch if you actually needed something).  When they hadn't been working for a while, one of the RAs picks one up and says, "are the f'ing walkie talkies ever going to work"?  He got a talking to by the police.

Similar, but completely different, I had a classmate who later became a football coach at our highschool, and he'd watch the games with his walkman-type radio on to hear the play-by-play as well.

Anyway, another kid from our neighborhood notices this, and sits on the bleachers just below the radio announcer and microphone. So he'd intermittently say, "Steve Warren is a poopy head!" or whatever, really loud, so the mic would pick it up. And Steve kept looking around to see who was yelling at him. Steve was a great guy, but that was still hilarious.

"The student made the remarks while believing to be 'joking' with friends; however, there is nothing funny about racially hateful statements"

What about non-racially hateful statements? And what made the statements 'hateful' as opposed to being 'racially stereotyped' or 'racially insensitive' statements?

When I was in high school a friend and I videotaped the varsity basketball games. Once my friend got confused about the camera: there was a button that toggled between pause and record. He thought it was recording when it was paused and vice versa.  The result was instead of recording the game against our biggest rivals that went into overtime, he only recorded every timeout, which was nothing but us zooming in on the hot girls in the stands and making comments about their hotness.

2023-01-24 1:57:59 PM
There is a trend in society, music, social media, and sadly, in our schools, of students believing it is ok to call each other names or use racial terms in a joking manner.  Disparaging remarks are never ok, and they're certainly not ok in schools. We will be working with student and school leadership to be certain that our students understand the importance of choosing words carefully. All students should feel safe and welcomed in schools and words play a large role in creating such an environment, whether they're between friends, or on the airwaves.

I actually like this stance.

Non racist, tangential CSB:

In high school we had an AM radio station we would do a friday morning show with. I was on the team/class that did the broadcast as one of the main anchors.

Since this was a small, poor school, the other main anchor and I were used to announce a lot of the smaller events. This case was the termite/peewee/JV football games that would all happen on the same night.

Putting two 18 year old boys in a pressbox, with no supervision for 5ish hours is never a good idea.

Anyways, the broadcast teacher was in the crowd and came up one time to give us a helpful hint that, one last name we were saying, "Shipp," we weren't enunciating the "pp" enough so it was coming across a little more like the swear word.

So again being a bored 18 year old boy, the next time the kid's name came up to call out I over emphasize the "P" into "Shi-PA" and almost blew out the speakers at the field with the shenanigans.

Long time ago in Orlando around the early part of November there was a DJ who fielded a request for some sort of Christmas music.  He played the requested music but forgot to turn the mic off before he started his rant about the "effing idiot wants effing Christmas music before it's even effing Thanksgiving."  The rant went of for nearly the full three minutes of the song and the expletives were abundantly salted through the whole rant.

We never heard that particular DJ again.  It was said he got a job as a shoe salesman at Thom McAn's on the Highway.

Open mics have tripped up lots of people.

When I was a grad student/teaching assistant, I was teaching one semester for a prof who was absent a lot because his father was dying in a country halfway around the world. We'd show up for class and there'd be a totally random faculty member there. Material still got covered, all good.

His partner (wife? I'm not sure if they're actually married), a famous author in her own right, covered for him one day. She was so famous she only taught small seminar classes, so she couldn't figure out how to get the clip-on mic to work with the sound system to reach the 300-seat room. I ran down the stairs to the lecture stage and got her all set up. As I was running back up the stairs, I missed a step and faceplanted.

She laughed SO HARD over the microphone I had just set up for her. Two hundred+ students followed suit. I did what I still feel was the only reasonable response; staggered my way back to my feet and struck this pose:

either the word is vulgar for all or vulgar for none.  we can't have a word used in pop culture that is also not allowed to be used by the very people that consume pop culture.

there is a trend of building minefields and then being outraged when someone steps on a mine.

It comes down to nuance.  People have just lost the ability to differentiate between something being said in a hateful way as opposed to just being a word.

Non-racial, high school radio shenanigans tangent -

Our school broadcast a local FM radio station over the intercoms during passing periods. The music cut out 1 minute before the end of the passing period. I build a small radio transmitter and would randomly broadcast silence a minute or two early, sending everyone scrambling thinking they were late. When it escalated to mimicing the bell and paging teachers to random places, they switched to CD input.

Nah, it's because Sharpton & Jackson will sue if you even slightly insinuate that PoC using racist slang is, still, in fact racist. That calling someone out on the usage is in and of itself racist. So they've gotta carefully word it in such a way that you have to be the one to make assumptions & fill in the blanks without overtly saying a PoC used a racist term against another because that's racist.

Those two chucklefarks are like Bezos legally representing 1920's subsistence farmers during the Dust Bowl.
