I narrowly escaped a chunk of that cliff falling on my head when I was in college up the way at UCSD. It has been slowly crumbling for a long time.

It's blurry because I had to snap a picture from the video, but why would anyone in their right mind hang out on a beach under THAT? Does any of that look safe to you? Doesn't it look like something that wants to fall "sooner rather than later?"

It's a beautiful spot, with beautiful views of San Clemente Island and excellent sunsets.  It's one of the spots from which I've seen the "green flash."  (It's more of a transient mirage than a flash...)  Good spot for warship and military aircraft spotting, too.

I got some nice photos of the full moon rising over Scripps here (somewhere).

We used to regularly do radio testing between aircraft and ground stations set up on the parking lot north of the paraglider port... which is also the lot where Black's Beach nudists like to park.

One morning we were setting up the EZ-ups, generator, and work tables when a convertible races up, skids to a stop, and a guy hops out wearing only speedos and flip-flops.  By the time he got to the top of the trail heading down the bluff, he was wearing nothing but flip-flops.

Not much to see on the beach from 300 feet up... you'd need binoculars.  Not that the kind of nudity you really wanna see actually happens down there.

And this is why owning developed property on seaside cliffs or bluffs in California isn't exactly a good long-term investment.

It's also not a good place to put infrastructure like a railroad, but there's a track running along bluffs way too close to the beach north of San Diego. I doubt it'll last a few more decades.

Hasn't that rail line been out of service for something like four months now?  Probably for this sort of reason.

The rail line through the Torrey Pines area, where this happened, is further inland. The line that runs along the beach is in Del Mar, a bit north of there where the cliffs are way lower. It was out of commission awhile back when the tracks shifted after a small earthquake but it is currently operational.

Especially after all the recent rain.
That was one of my old stomping grounds. Watching the seniors play volleyball in the buff was an education all in itself. The coach at least had on a big floppy hat.

But it sure is a spectacular ride. Did wonder about long term maintenance tho.

Wait until the Big One hits. Half the hills in southern California will be having landslides.

I was at Camp Pendleton for ROTC, and we're at this area that's a few miles from the beach. They had cut into a small hillside to make room for some bleachers. I took a look at the "dirt" halfway up the cut, and it's just compressed sand held together by old organic matter that had decomposed. You have to figure that the organic material only goes so far into the sand, and everything below that is just sand held in place by gravity.

When the Big One hits, half of California will experience ground liquefaction. It will need a reconstruction effort on the scale of Ukraine, if not more.
