They should track numbers of tickets sold vs measuring the take of ever-increasing ticket prices.

Finally caught a screening yesterday.  It was like Terminator, Aliens, Abyss, True Lies, and Titanic combined in one movie, with a bit of Jaws thrown in for good measure.  On weed.

There was even scattered applause around the theatre when the credits rolled.

Fair warning: I have an "Ass: The Movie" meme and I WILL use it if I have to. I hope and pray that it does not come to that, but you better believe me when I say, I will not hesitate.

And to add to the warning, if you fail to learn your lesson, I also have a meme of sheep filing into a movie theater.

You do NOT want me to break that one out. Trust me on that.

Having said my piece, the thread can now proceed.

But I will be watching. Very closely.

Adjusted for inflation from last year? It'll still make more than Spider-Man: Too Many Spider-Men.

It was a lot of fun, like a Disney ride, and those are also a lot of fun.  Hating on it just makes you seem angry at the concept of entertainment.

I thought it was simply ok.  Didn't hate it, didn't love it.  But for me, the actual 5 min long Disney Avatar ride was a hell of a lot more fun than the combined 5+ hours of the films.  The movie tickets were cheaper though, so I'll give them that.

Spectacular scenery, visuals, cinematography.
Rich, immersive sound.

Dumb ass story.

The movie will soon meld seamlessly nto and become an indelible bit permanent part of our national zeitgeist, just like the first one did.

We'll be quoting it for years.

We went to see it Tues. We wanted to see something else (new Hanks) but realized that his could be just as good as home but A2 really should be in the theater with the huge screen and massive sound system (and if possible in 3D like we were able to).

Wow, what a visually stunning experience. Wow, what a mostly dull/predictable movie (my only surprise was that Spider didn't go with the colonel, setting up the epic brother vs brother battle in A4...).  At 'least' an hour of the special effects 'see what we can do with computer imagery now' masturbation could have been cut. Everything was well done/exciting, but it seemed like any scene that could be accomplished in a minute was stretched to 3-4 so that there could be more 'flying' through the water or other, cool in moderation, shots .

I'm glad we saw it in the theater, but we agreed that there is zero need to ever see it again ... and that's sad.

The award shows so far agree. Several nominations in various categories, but zero nominations for its screenplay, and only claimed a single win for its special effects. Cameron's proved once again that theatrically at least, great spectacle beats a great script.

But it remains to be seen how (or even if) the industry will adjust to capitalize on this. Profit-wise, the movie is making an impressive amount of money, but it also cost an impressive amount. I think he's exaggerating a bit, but if Cameron's to be believed, the movie still has to make another few million just to break even. And like the first, so far at least it's not making big bucks on merchandizing. It'll be interesting to see where this leads.

Fantasia was originally a flop, and a fairly major one. Not an outrageous comparison movie-wise, but money-wise it is

I saw it over the weekend, my buddy wanted to see it I was kinda meh about seeing it. It did look good in the 3D on the big screen and the world was beautiful but they really could have cut a chunk out of the middle it dragged for a bit. Are they going to wait another 10 years for the next sequel?

The problem with that comparison is conditions are so different now so there are some caveats when you compare theatrical runs today with movies that were re-released several times prior to home video being available.

Gone with the Wind, for example, had wide re-releases in 1942,1947, 1954, 1961, 1967, 1971, 1974 (plus 1989 and 1998 re-releases in the home video era). You just aren't going to see the same kind of theatrical re-releases these days, because people have other ways to watch the movies. In 1947 if you wanted to watch Gone with the Wind again (or you were too young to catch it in its original run), going to see it in the theater was your only option so the theatrical re-releases sold a lot more tickets than they do today.

Now now. This is something that's been very important to him for a long time since last month.

On the other hand, there were far fewer movie theaters back when Gone With the Wind was still a major draw, the international market wasn't a big factor in its overall success, and the US population has greatly increased since then. There's been so many shifts and changes in how the box office works and in the many factors that influence it, there isn't really a way to make a direct comparison between the successes of the two. Nor would it prove a great deal if there were a way, as each film is very much a product of its time. Avatar made with 1930s era effects wouldn't have done nearly as well, and a modern adaptation of Gone With the Wind would draw far more controversy than ticket buyers.

The idea of swapping their time periods does raise an interesting question, though. If Avatar had been made back in the early days of Hollywood, it's a near certainty that it would have been a musical. If Cameron had gotten Lin Manuel Miranda to score both Avatar films with unforgettable earworm ballads instead of completely forgettable stock dialogue, would the movies have been more successful or less? Personally I could see it going either way, although just one song on the level of a "We Don't Talk About Bruno" would have done wonders for their toy sales.
