(CNN)   It's like a real-life Gilligan's Island. Except there's no Ginger. Or Marianne. And the boat doesn't wreck. And the skipper is the charismatic head of an internet doomsday cult   (cnn.com) divider line

Well, from an evolutionary stand point...

Yes, but have any of you actually TRIED bunker living? It's the new hipster beard.

I think most of us did in 2020.

Hopefully a suicide cult

It all started because they are anti-vaxxer morans.

I hope the cannibals on the island cook them in a giant pot next to buggs bunny

I wonder if the majority of vaccine cult folks have started to realize they got played for political gains now that it's not really a media thing any more.

I'd say more than deserve, they are requesting it by their own stupid actions.

Absolutely not. You will never convince them they were fooled.

They believe it in the exact same way they believe their religion, which is to say; not really, but the will never ever admit it.

No, it's a cult, so they're convinced everyone is trying to trick them, and the only people they can trust are other cult members. You can't convince them that they're wrong, total waste of effort.

Ragin' Asian: That's a boatload of mental problems. Then he jumped overboard.

Going from Hawaii to the Cook Islands to American Samoa to Wallis on a sail boat averaging say, 10 miles an hour in heavy seas would probably drive most people to jump overboard.

Personally, I will only follow messiahs I find online if they have neck, face and finger tattoos. That way you know they're authentic.

Wait. So some old guy convinced these young men to join him on a boat because a bunch of conspiracy theories. And he claims they "jumped off".

Sure bud. Unfortunately I'm sure their dismembered remains are in a shark by now.

Nope.

At 300 miles out it is safer to just toss them over board. They are pretty much guaranteed to die and if any remains are found there will be no sign of foul play. Unlike knife marks on bones, etc.

The willfully stupid do. There's no shame in being ignorant; no one can know everything. But if you choose belief over evidence, I have no sympathy if you suffer the consequences.

Just a follow up.

Hawaii to Cook Islands: 2840 miles
Cook Islands to American Samoa: 865 miles
American Samoa to Wallis: 375 miles

Total: 4080 miles on a confined boat.  Yeah, I'm jumping over too.

Have you noticed that is has become nearly impossible to distinguish between republicans and people with severe mental health conditions?

Yeah, I know, they're the same picture and all that.

Damn... someone is going to take this and actually make a new Gilligan's Island show which will land as badly if not worse then every other remake someone thought they could do better or more modern.

That is why the GOP does not fund mental health care and why they won't allow mental health status to be a barrier to gun ownership.

I think they compartmentalize that conspiracy theory and just stop thinking about it as they move on to the next one without a second thought. The human mind is remarkably flexible in creating and maintaining its own reality.

So, what I'm getting here is that a sort of mentally fragile young man travelled a long ass ways just to commit suicide.

Not unheard of. At least his family didn't drive him to the airport or buy his ticket.

At least his family didn't hook him up with his guru. Also, this should be a life lesson of what happens when you meet a guru. If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him. While, Shriekback did a great tune with Gunning for the Buddha, the Tao you can name is not the eternal Tao. And you're NEVER going to find the Wisdom of the Ages on YouTube.

CSB: I have a friend who grew up in a real, no BS doomsday cult. She got out of it on her own, but it was a long process. For years afterwards she rejected the idea she was in a cult, it was just 'the church she went to growing up'. Met up with her a couple months ago, and she had finally gotten to the point where she acknowledged it was a cult. She told me some stories. Really unbelievable what those organizations put kids through.

The most farked up part - she has a lot of trouble making friends and relating to people because she grew up in such a farked up place. She told me she's tempted to go back into it, because that's where all her friends are. She doesn't believe their bullshiat, but she can go and pretend just so she can have a community to be part of. I said "Please don't do that." I try to call up and check on her regularly.

Sounds like you've given it some thought.  Would you care to explain the whereabouts of your bird grade teacher?
