Holy crap, he just had a killer series of matches with FTR/nee the Revival.

I'm sad we'll never see another one, but glad he got to go out after a really excellent match.

It's Mark's birthday on top of that. I really hope he's OK and wish him all the best.

I know he was controversial a few years ago, but I loved them. Such fantastic tag team wrestling, such performers.   Have an autographed 8x10 of mark and jay.  This is a huge loss for the industry because together they really carried the flag of tag team wrestling in a way no one else could in both attitude and performance.

He said some bad stuff. He then fought the rest of his career to repair that damage. There were a ton of wrestlers last night and this morning on Twitter who are out have said that Jay apologized to them and worked to understand how he hurt them with his comments. Honestly, that's pretty damn mature and shows he grew as a person. Also him being a dad helped him out as well. It sucks that WB/Discovery would not allow them on any AEW show because of the comments yet USA and Fox have 0 issues with anything Vince has said/done/been sued over.

Apparently he was driving his daughters to cheerleading practice when they were hit head-on and he died instantly. One of his girls is/was in emergency surgery as well. What a horrible way to go.

This one hurts. I saw him live when he was 17 (his brother Mark was 16) and they were already amazing for their experience level... not green at all, and so well-versed in fundamentals you'd think they were 10-tear pros already. He said one stupid thing on Twitter and spent the last ten years of his life owning the hell out of it... it was truly a teachable moment for him. RIP.

Apparently TK went to bat for them numerous times with the WBD guys but, the rumor was, there was one guy high enough on the approval list that wouldn't budge no matter what Jay had done since those tweets.  This guy wasn't ever going to approve Jay being on a WBD channel if he could stop it. It's the reason we had to have the Gunn's challenging FTR, for the Briscoes, to that Dog Collar match, they wouldn't even let them do a tape promo if Mark was the only one doing it.

On one hand if Jay and his brother had been more willing to play backstage politics and kiss the right asses they easily would have gotten the attention they deserved.  On the other, the Briscoes "no shiats given" attitude is what made them so damn real.  This is a huge loss for wrestling and I can't imagine what his family is going through.

TK can earn all the street cred he's ever lost in the past year or so by just running a tribute video to Jay tonight and tell WB/DISCOVERY to fark off for 5-10 minutes and let wrestling fans grieve and celebrate Jay's life. You know goddamn well that if Vince ever dies that USA and FOX will run tributes to him and he has knowingly done 1000x worse things and shown no remorse ever.

FYI: the school district that his daughter goes to is closed for grief counseling today. Jay also was a football coach in the town as well. The whole community is wrecked.

I don't thinkwe are getting a show like AEW did when Brodie Lee passed away, but I wouldn't be shocked to see something similar.  Jay wasn't part of AEW directly but a lot of the guys in the locker room went through ROH at some point, or knew Jay from the Indy scene, so it is something I think they should do.  There is no need, with a PPV still over a month away, that they can't do a tribute show for him.

Jay doesnt need a Brody Lee show. He deserves a 4-6 minutes retrospective of his career in ROH and the indies.

The Owen thing was intended to be a way to have Bret show up on AEW and present the awards but the WWE figured it out pretty quickly and offered Bret a pretty decent 'legends' contract, IIRC, so he couldn't show up there. They then went to Martha who couldn't say yes fast enough to anything that would look bad for the WWE, which she was right to do.

The fed that employs Jeff "Hold My Beer" Hardy, Darby "BANZAI" Allen, and that trainwreck of a women's division having an Owen Heart Memorial Tournament is a level of peak irony we've never seen before.

I know the surname of course but I don't believe I knew of either one of the brothers or even if there is a true relation to the last name I do know.

Saw mention of a bad comment so of course I had to look it up. Not great, though if he made good with others I'm not sure it'd be right to hold a grudge over a negative moment I wasn't even aware of until just now. It isn't an entirely wrong thing to do from my perspective but there exists a tendency for friends and loved ones of people directly affected to not forgive long after the aggrieved party has shown grace which is sort of weird if you think about it but people are funny sometimes.

Updated info from the Delaware State Police:
On January 17, 2023, at approximately 5:09 p.m., a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was traveling westbound on Laurel Road just west of Goose Nest Road. At the same time, a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 was traveling eastbound on Laurel Road in the same vicinity. For unknown reasons, the driver of the Silverado 1500 pickup truck failed to remain in her lane, crossed the center line, and entered the eastbound lane of Laurel Road, directly into the path of the Silverado 2500. This resulted in a head-on collision between the two pickup trucks in the eastbound lane.
The driver of the Silverado 1500, identified as 27-year-old Lillyanne Ternahan of Frankford, Delaware, was wearing her seatbelt. The driver of the Silverado 2500, identified as 38-year-old Jamin Pugh of Laurel, Delaware, was not wearing his seatbelt. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The two passengers in Pugh's pickup truck, identified as his 12-year-old daughter and 9-year-old daughter, were both properly restrained. Both girls were taken by ambulance to an area hospital and were admitted in critical condition.
Alcohol involvement in this crash is unknown. No other vehicles were involved in this collision. The roadway was closed for approximately four hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident. Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this collision...

His wife put out this morning that the 12 year old was in surgery for her back (can't feel her legs atm). The 9 year old is in serious condition but should be OK. If you liked him or didn't, this was just a tragedy. I don't know if him having his seatbelt on would have saved him but it might have increased his odds, thought the other driver had hers on and she didn't make it.

Jay went on the record, during a number of appearances, that he thought he was, "upholding the bible," with what he said. He was, at that point in his life, still influenced by the Hellfire and Brimstone church he'd attended all his life, and the anti-gay stuff is what they preached. He didn't have much life experience other than life in that small town, so it was generally accepted that the church was right.
Once he hit the road and started traveling as a wrestler, seeing what the real world was like, he'd realised that everything he'd posted was hateful and wrong.
I think that new life experience, where different races, sexes, and genders all lived in more-or-less harmony, is what led to him being so open and friendly with virtually everyone. Which is why you see such an outpouring of love from the entire pro wrestling world, about how beloved he was, so open and welcoming to absolutely everyone.

Cornette made that point when his comments originally came out.  He knew the type community the Briscoes came from and didn't think Jay was a bigot, just another insulated country boy who didn't have any experience outside his home county.

Oh, 100% I agree.  He made amends and apologized, and to me that was that.  much like when someone finds a hateful tweet someone made when they're 20 years old and now they're 35, i'm more interested in how they progressed as a person over the years.

I hated that they couldn't get the industry support in the last 10 years to show on mainstream television just how talented they were, likely because of that tweet.

Checking his recent twitter, him practicing the dance & cheerleading routine with his daughter, that made me tear up this afternoon.  And one of his daughters can't feel her legs after the wreck?   Repeatedly the most important thing that comes up when he was interviewed and what his friends are bringing up was that family and his bonds with his loved ones and man... Its just incredibly sad for the fans, friends and family who loved the guy.

The professor died??? he is most certainly a street ball legend at this point.  And he's widely known;  theres about 15 years of footage of the guy regularly breaking ankles on local courts.   Not to mention clips of him playing against actual pros.

The only problem with that line of thought is that at the time Jay said what he said, he HAD that experience outside his county after working all over North America. And country, come to think of it (he'd already made trips throughout Europe and Japan). So it's silly to blow that off as him being some Okie from Muskogee who'd never left town - but he still deserved all the credit in the world for manning up and working incredibly hard to put it behind him for good.

deadsanta: The only people who can be "legendary" by age 38 are weed dealers.  That's just a fact, sorry wrestling fans.

Michael Jordan left basketball (to go to baseball, admittedly) at the age of 30.
In that time, he won 3 NBA championships, 2 Olympic gold medals, was 3 time league MVP, 3 time finals MVP, 7 tones the league scoring leader, and so very much more. Plus all good college accomplishments. He was, at that time, already not just a legend, but considered the best ever.

Again, he was 30

isamudyson: Updated info from the Delaware State Police:

Say what you will about Jay Briscoe, but after reading about it on social media along with the deluge of assholes making all sorts of claims/comments before knowing one iota of info about the accident... and hearing the other car crossed the center line and his kids being injured is toughest part. All I can say is stay safe out there.
