I was a huge Popeye fan as a kid. In general, I think Fleischer Studios just made better cartoons than any of their competitors (see Superman, of course). Weird, interesting characters, incredibly inventive animation, and plots more akin to a comic book superhero than a funny-ha-ha cartoon. The Robert Altman movie, while a little bit slow moving at times (for kids especially), is pretty damn good.

A few years back they released a sneak peak at an upcoming Popeye movie, and I thought it looked great, but sadly I guess it was cancelled:

Youtube i4tNuM9XttM

Side note: The whole Super Mario franchise has been based in part on Popeye- video game legend and Popeye fan Shigeru Miyamoto originally intended Donkey Kong to be a Popeye game, but Nintendo couldn't get the rights (although they eventually did a few years later and made a damn good game out of it). The next time you see blue collar, sailor-cap-wearing Mario chasing the kidnapped Princess as she hangs over the shoulder of the brute King Bowser, think about how close to a Popeye cartoon it all is.

I assume spinach is code for whatever meds he's skipping.

Just as well. A rebooted Popeye would work better as a more adult-oriented show, allowing for better story lines than eat spinach punch Bluto (who was a minor side-villain in one adventure in the old Segar strip). And he's got to have his pipe, even if he's never seen smoking it.

The 1980sish version of the cartoon had a PSA with him assuring us that he only uses the pipe to toot on.

UberNeuman: Popeye walks into a house of prostitution.  Madam asks "What do YOU want!?"
Popeye says "Well... blow me!"

Reminds me of the Wedding Of Popeye And Olive Oyl that Peter David wrote. First, King Features Syndicate didn't want there to be an actual wedding. David pointed out besides the title of the comic that there was a Popeye And Son cartoon a few years ago, did they want the son to be illegitimate?
And in the comic itself, after the ceremony Popeye exclaims "well, blow me down!" And Olive says "Later Popeye, later".

Spinach in a can is genuinely the food of the Devil.  Whereas uncooked spinach is actually pretty good, and lightly steamed or sautéed spinach in a garlic sauce is magical.

Popeye was apparently an idiot.  Did they even once show him consuming anything other than the worst version of his magic food?
