In general I support the idea, but if you're in the casino, you're not working. So you are skipping work, which ruins it for everyone.

If you can work from a sailboat moored off St. John, great!  But you should be actually working.

One of the best employees I ever had would play solitaire all day long on her computer.  But there's no way in hell you're getting anything done in a casino.  It's against casino rules, I'm pretty sure.

The CEO of our small startup has given me crap for wearing a mask for the week after two people had coronavirus and went home. After one of those two people told everyone in our WhatsApp group that he tested positive, the CEO basically told him to suck it up and and get over it.

Now, I'd rather work remotely anywhere but the office.

Does this guy not know about having a virtual background?  It's like three clicks to set up.

Apparently the guy's boss gets really suspicious if the background isn't his blurred home office, so sometimes he needs to find a plain wall background and say its a coffee shop. This time it was a casino bar because the lobby seating was full and the background wall in the bar was nondescript. He didn't mention actually going on the casino floor, but did share he spent one day with his laptop out at the pool on a day when there were no meetings.

I don't blame you for NRTFA because it was the most inane piece of shiat I've ever read, but he/she wasn't gambling in the casino, they were working from their hotel room and went to the casino to find a neutral background.

There, I saved you five minutes.

I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies. Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about. But trust me.... You don't. I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you don't know what you are talking about. This is how bad info gets passed around. If you don't know about the topic....Don't make yourself sound like you do. Cuz some Farkers believe anything they hear.

My wife's job is 100% WFH, and as long as she's getting her work done, no one cares if she's in her office or outside on the patio next to the pool.
Vegas casino might be stretching the limits, though.

TFA is so banal I am sure something like it happened, but how can a full-time remote worker still be so dumb about making it transparent to coworkers?

THEY HAD A HOTEL ROOM but for some reason thought a bar would be the best spot for a video call? Maybe Vegas is different, but many hotels also have small conference and work rooms available that would be perfectly quiet and bland. If you're regularly staying in one to visit family as in TFA, the staff will probably be delighted to hook you up even on short notice. Probably easier/cheaper for them even than room upgrades, meal vouchers, show ticket deals and still a 'special' perk to help out a repeat customer.

Working in a non-standard place once in a while is probably ok. If you're doing it all the time and your argument is "well I'm working so what does it matter where I am?" kind of cuts both ways --- if you're really working, then why do you insist to do it from a casino? Screw this idiot.

It does not see the center screen with whatever YouTube item is playing.

My work involves tons of meetings with people across the US and Canada, so most would have a Zoom component regardless of if I were in the office or not, and dealing with all those meetings in a cubicle farm is productive for nobody. I work remotely from home, where I have a laptop docking station, two 27" monitors, and a 50" TV set up as displays for spreadsheets.

I'm not taking that shiat to Vegas (also, I loathe Vegas, so if I'm there, it's for work anyway), and trying to work on a single tiny laptop monitor would be literal torture. Conveniently, it also means I've never had problems with surprise meetings being an issue.

More to the point, not sure why the Hotel room wasn't an option, set up in front of a blank wall, never seen a room that couldn't handle that, maybe turn on blur. Job's a Good-un. Author just seems like an idiot.

The implication was that with a photo of his home office background, the virtual background feature can show his home office plants behind his video. So he just needs a live background which the virtual background is able to hide.

While finding herself in a casino in the middle of the workday is her bad, the idea that every hour has to be accounted for for remote salaried personnel if they're meeting their production goals is ridiculous.

Extend this argument one step further. If this work can clearly be done 100% remotely, then why is the company paying an American worker American wages?

Sounds like it could be outsourced to Vietnam for 30 cents on the dollar.

Yes, the only keeping a job from being outsourced overseas is an office.

If you're assuming work that doesn't need to be done domestically, it actually sounds like it could be done by a Vietnamese company.  Why screw the workers and leave the management and ownership in place?  They're the ones skimming all the profits.

If your icon's always green that means you aren't working. Work is an absorbing activity that requires attention and concentration. Your calendar should be blocked off for periods of unavailability to do your actual work.

The corollary of "why should I have to go into the office?" Is "why should I pay local wages if the work can be done abroad at one tenth the cost?".

Some business remains local because of established relationships, proximity to specific equipment, familiarity with premises or ability to respond to emergency needs. I've been through this with my small business customers. I'm no more than 45 minutes away from them, and I have a better track record of being responsive vs. other contractors they have tried to use.

I do a certain amount of small business managed IT services. Even if the vast majority of my work can be remote, I can still drive in when I need to.

If the job could be done just as well abroad at 1/10 the cost then it would have been moved there already.  Stop it with this bullshiat talking point.

Also security and contractual requirements may require that work be done where state, federal, and HIPAA legal requirements can be met.

I was a contractor with an employer for about five years. When the pandemic hit, IMO, employees did an outstanding job pivoting to telecommuting with little guidance from the olds in power whose most creative idea was to demand that we all come back into the office the following month, every month. My final position was high pressure and made more so by various managers including our immediate manager. One of our most productive team members often traveled with his parents. (He was a young employee.) He put his trips on the calendar along with complete contact information. He always worked the total number of hours he was allowed to work. He was on all Zoom meetings. He put work first while on these trips and remained a top performer. It made our supervisor crazy. I cannot wrap my head around getting so angry about a great worker doing great work because the location might be more pleasant than usual.
