Surprise magma chamber growing under Mediterranean volcano

Someone is surprised that there is a mama chamber beneath a volcano.

I'm curious as to what other things started this person. Water being wet, perhaps.

It's normal, and could happen to any volcano.

To be shortened to "smagma" in the research literature.

It's not great but better than my initial reading of the headline which suggested "surprise smegma".

Hah, you have a point. But it's the features of this chamber (e.g. that it is relatively shallow and not very solidified) that are surprising, not the fact that there is some molten rock under a volcano

Santorini is delightful, so it would be lovely if this formed another island like it. On the other hand, the eruption of There did wipe out the Minoans, so maybe we should hope it doesn't erupt? I'm torn here.

Of course, if it just formed another Naxos, then yeah, best it doesn't erupt.
