They never claimed to want private, obscure lives with no media attention. That's a spin that was put on them by the British media to paint them as hypocrites. And you fell for it. What they actually said they wanted was to step back from working as royals while continuing to honor the Queen, Commonwealth, and their patronages. But the British tabloids are feral and spun their statements into something else entirely.

You left out the part where they wanted to continue to receive the salaries and perks of the job without actually doing the job.  And as far a honouring the Queen I am sure dumping on her dead husband would have pleased her greatly.  But at least they honoured her by waiting until she died before venting their spleens.
