Moderate Republicans became Democrats a generation and a half ago.

This is also why the Democratic party is very conservative today compared to the left in other countries.

The GOP is painting itself into a corner; the further right they drift the more they alienate rational people.

It was a showdown, between the far right and the absolute fascist loon wing.  But it's done now.  The far right lost, the loons won.  Now everyone will get in line again and go on with their normal business - making sure the nation crashes and burns, and blaming Democrats for it.

Yeah, probably

It's just that the big grifting money is all on the far right. That's why everybody is gravitating that way.

It's really just a mob turf war.

There is no such thing as "GOP moderates" anymore. They were eaten into extinction by the MAGA Cult long ago.

The US is very conservative, and the left in other countries would get on the order of twice the votes of the green party.

What I like about Fark, as opposed to mainstream media outlets, is that it's completely above clicky baity headlines.

They choose not to. They can suffer.

I'm guessing this guy's on your "ignored" list:

And I'm also guessing your "ignored" list includes everybody that's ever debunked your comforting lies.

I think George Pataki's performance in the 2016 Republican presidential primary was the last whimper of the "moderate Republican" phenomenon. Did he ever go above 1% in the polls? Or perhaps it was Olympia Snowe's retirement in 2012. Anybody heard from Christie Whitman lately?

Of course, nowadays very conservative people like John Kasich, Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney and the late John McCain are sometimes branded "moderates" simply because they're not complete mouth-breathers. That's probably where TFA is going.

No.  Turns out the howler monkeys are in different tribes.  Sporkfoot will easily win reelection and has joined with the establishment tribe.  Bonobo will probably not get reelected and has chosen the Jackhole Prime tribe.

She had a speaking slot at the 2020 Democratic convention, along with John Kasich and Susan Molinari.

It's hard to convince people you're a forward-looking, left-leaning party when your convention looks like a rerun of the 1996 Republican National Convention.

2023-01-11 6:28:00 PM
Yes, the Tuesday Group: until recently, led by Charlie Dent (the rare pro-choice Republican, who resigned from Congress rather than face an increasingly hostile conservative base), then by Fred Upton (who declined to run for re-election rather than face an increasingly hostile conservative base), then by Elise Stefanik (whom you may recall for having affixed herself like a remora to noted moderate Donald Trump), and now by David Joyce (who voted "no" on both Trump impeachments, refused to censure Paul Gosar for The Gosarian's video about killing a fellow member of Congress, and said he'd vote for Trump even after Trump's call to suspend the Constitution).

So very, very moderate. Much influence.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A REPUBLICAN MODERATE.

All the things that American moderates and conservatives call "far-left" are just common sense in other prosperous nations.

It's not a moderate vs. farkwad fight for the GOP.

It's "republicans getting screwed out of committees" vs. the Freedom Caucus.

McCarthy's position is completely untenable.  He's just dumb enough to think the Speakership eventually gives him a path to the Presidency.  No reason he would gut the fark out of the position just to have it. He wants the title, not the actual functions.

There are two types of Republicans:

- "It's time to gas the Jews and queers again."

- "Let's hold off on the Jew-and-queer-killing rhetoric until we have all the power. There's still money for me to make and you're cramping my style."
