The antibiotics cause the gut microbiome of cattle to produce more methane among other things.

Asked about an EU-style ban on preventive use of antibiotics, an FDA spokesperson responded, "The laws in the US and our livestock population are not the same as that of the EU or other countries. The FDA's initiatives to promote judicious use and reduce AMR [antimicrobial resistance] were devised specifically for the US and the conditions we face with the aim of maximizing effectiveness and cooperation of drug sponsors, veterinarians, and animal producers."

Gods, when faced with the crisis that overuse of antibiotics would lead to stronger bacteria and more deaths, America chose to let it's people die rather than let the beef industry take a hit in profits.

This I don't know about but I hear from some guy at a bar, that there's a shortage of antibiotics right now? If that's true I take it they're all going to the cows?

My favorite brewpub's owner also has a farm where he raises cattle on a diet of grass, spent grain and used hops. The hops are probiotics. Nice idea, but the beef is crazy expensive there.

I always found the guilt routine they'd give to people seeking antibiotics ridiculous in light of this chronic massive scale abuse. I mean, yeah, that amoxicillin might not fix my seasonal cold and I don't need it for that reason. But fark off with the "not abusing antibiotics" argument as long as they are essentially a subset of cattle feed.
