Just in case I can no longer stream any of them for whatever reason.

I'm still kind of pissed off that when I really wanted to show Mrs. F Dawn of the Dead, no one was streaming it due to a legal problem, so I bought the DVD on eBay and managed to get an okay deal on it. Then like the next day I found every different cut of it on YouTube.

Then we ended up watching it on YT anyway, because my cheapass Blu-Ray player picked the night we planned to watch it to break down.

I didn't know they released a version of The Abyss with an alternate ending.  I looked up that ending and apparently the aliens were intending to destroy humanity with tidal waves because we're so shiatty but decide not to because Ed Harris is so cool.  The article implies that that ending is better but it seems really stupid to me.   Besides the fact that tidal waves wouldn't destroy humanity, it's too much shift to the plot and mood the film builds up. The film is a claustrophobic interpersonal action/drama under the sea and that ending swings it too hard to being about everyone on the planet. It also removes some of the mystery and magic from the aliens.  That ending would have ruined the film.

Listening to Spotify shuffle with my little kid the other day and she heard a song from the 2019 Woody Woodpecker movie. I believe that the reason it's nearly impossible to get WKRP in Cincinnati anywhere is because of the cost of securing music rights.

stuhayes2010: Most good movies aren't available on streaming, it's almost if they know and want you to pay for it.

That seems pretty hyperbolic.  There are a ton of excellent movies available to stream, along with a lot of terrible ones. Same holds true for those you can only purchase.

2023-01-06 9:36:08 PM
Well, TBH, back in the day there were plenty of movies that never made it to VHS for (reasons), or were released once, and never released again for (reasons). So the scarcity of certain movies isn't something new - but I think the sticking point in this day & age is the fact that it's just as simple as throwing a proverbial 'switch' in most cases as opposed to coordinating and launching a physical release. But in the end, it's all about the studios/streamers not wanting to pay rights on things they think no one wants to watch (or that they think don't fit their current marketing strategy). With many newer movies having their streaming rights set up separately right from the get-go, and older film packages having those rights added with newly negotiated contracts, it's a significant cost considering how slim the margins on streaming probably are.
