I think some people were saying this, yes. But people say dumb things all the time. You know, stuff like "vaccines cause autism," or "New York style pizza is better than Chicago pizza," or "Firefly was a good show that shouldn't have been canceled," or "beets should be considered food." You just gotta learn to dismiss the noise.

The CGI is the expensive part in films that intentionally set out to reach new standards of visual effects.

Cameron is a dogshiat writer and Avatar's story is hamfisted garbage, but boy are they gorgeous flicks to look at.

This is the whole reason I don't think I can become interested in this franchise.

It reminds me of Image Comics from the early 90's where you had visually striking art, but little or nothing in the way of substance and storytelling.  Impressive visuals aren't enough if this story is thin, and I think that's what is happening with this franchise.

That said, it shouldn't be surprising that it would make a lot of money once the film was released internationally.

I feel like Cameron is more interested in the tools of storytelling than the craft itself, sort of like a musician who's more interested in collecting gear than actually making music.

That is it exactly.

Happily saw it with my daughter and watched as the movie presented topics that would have been interesting to explore in a universe where you could essentially live forever, or fork into different versions of yourself, or change yourself in order to adapt to a new environment; and pissed away every one of them in order to make an action-packed, revenge plot against one guy and his family.  Despite the pretty visuals, I was bored.

So . . . you're saying that both sides are bad?

Who are they, though?  I've barely seen anyone.  At the most, I've seen people respond to the irrational haters with 'it's not bad' or 'I enjoyed it'.  Or, ya'know laughing at how all the doom prognostication didn't pan out, and that I can understand a bit, because it's fun to nettle people that invested.

The Avatar movies need to be seen in a theater, in 3d. That's why they'll always make money. If you've only seen an Avatar movie at home, you haven't really seen an Avatar movie. The plot, acting, and general quality have nothing to do with it.

Wait awhile and the usual suspects might appear in this thread, as they typically do. They're definitely no creation of mine. I'd change up their dialogue and occasionally raise other topics besides just gushing about the box office.

Frankly, the only thing weirder than Fark's Avatar defenders are the ones like yourself who want to defend the defenders. Where's the attraction? They haven't made a dime in ticket sales.

Dude, pretending our resident defenders don't exist is defending them. Bslim is evenly balanced out by He Who Must Not Be Named (because Fark rules frown on calling out someone who, surprisingly, isn't in this thread despite rushing to be in all the others), and it's silly to try convincing anyone otherwise.

As for the comic nerds, do you find it just as baffling that they like Marvel movies but have found most of the DC ones less than great? This might blow your mind, but liking a category of movie doesn't mean you're required to like every single film that falls into that genre.

Again, not saying it wouldn't make money, just saying that most of the focus is on visually striking imagery, and there's far less emphasis on telling an interesting story.  In that sense, I find it to be like a lot of video games.

The real question of Avatar 2 is the same as the one raised by the first Avatar. Do you really need memorable characters or stories if your visuals are impressive enough to wow audiences on their own? And the answer seems to be a strong "No". The Transformers franchise showed that the visuals don't even have to be that good so long as the concept of the visuals is an attention grabber. Same lesson learned from all those live-action remakes of old Disney cartoons. (But you have to choose the right concept. Seeing Aladdin's flying carpet ride in live action intrigued a lot of people. Seeing Dumbo fly was far less exciting.)

And the international market works better with simple stories and whiz bang effects, because that means something that's easy to translate, and also offers spectacle that few overseas film studios can afford to provide. But the expense and time required to make something like an Avatar means that few studios will try to directly imitate it. It's the kind of thing that really has to be a personal project, because despite how well Avatar 2 is doing right now, it really wasn't a guaranteed hit. Cameron had his doubts how it might do, and it's not like other visually luscious movies like Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets hadn't been massive flops, even though they also had meticulously created alien worlds done by the same effects house of Weta Digital.
cineclub.deView Full Size

Had it stayed with the suspiciously Navi-like bald aliens in their waterworld paradise, and not tried to sell its intensely bland human actors as action heroes, perhaps Valerian might have had a very different performance at the box office. It's hard to say. But it's an easy bet that the studios are closely studying exactly what people are enjoying about Avatar 2, and will try to incorporate some of its gimmicks without having to invest so much into making them.
