I definitely suck at it.

Tried it during the steam sale, returned after 2 hours. It's just not for me.

Gameplay aside, I kept hearing how amazing the visuals are. Granted I did not explore that much, but they didn't really stand out to me as anything special. If you would've told me that this game was made in like 2015 I would believe you.

We are getting to the point where visuals are not "groundbreaking" anymore. We get incremental changes and bumps in resolution. Where games really matter now for me are in writing, gameplay, and intelligence of the enemies.

Funny thing: some of the games that are best at these things are NOT recent games.

Thats because major studios are run by complete shiatbags who think graphics are more important than anything else. Think about the timing on this: 2077 gets released completely broken and unfinished and 2 years later they have a 4k ray tracing HD graphics update for the witcher 3. Someone actually decided a graphics patch for a game that didnt need it was more important than making a complete game

Got it for xmas, been playing a lot since then.

It's good, but not great.  The graphics are good, but nothing to write home about.  Gameplay is pretty fun.  Lots of exploring and challenging fights.

I'm fairly far in, having revealed most of the map.  I've steamrolled most bosses so far, including two that made a few 'hardest bosses' lists on the first try (Margit and Starscourge Radahn.)  That said, I can't seem to beat two others with a pure melee build and am looking to change things up.

Much of its difficulty is due to crap hit detection, terrible camera controls and straight up cheap bosses.

If all you care about is number of pixels and vertices, Fromsoft games aren't that great. What they excel at is aesthetics and art direction. I'll take any Fromsoft game over a hyper-realistic shooter where everything is shades of brown.

Really?  Elden Ring is mostly shades of brown, save a few areas.  And the art style is pretty generic 'dark gothic fantasy' that has been done to death since the 70s.

I can see my sword clip right through some enemies and bosses with no damage.  I've been hit many times when the enemy clearly missed.  Not to mention getting hit through walls.  The hit boxes are not 'tight'.

And the camera lock barely works, rotates slowly, has a narrow FOV, and is in too tight to see things right beside you.

I hate it when I suck at a video game.  I might try a game and think to myself "this looks fun, but I can't even accomplish anything on easy mode in this game."

One of them is Total War.  I've tried to get into that game several times and for the life of me I just can't figure it out.

I certainly hope Starfield is not going to be like that.  Bethesda's games are known for not being very challenging when it comes to game play.  But it definitely doesn't make their games less fun.

Hit boxes and camera, no idea - they were fine for me.  Clipping through walls is a giant problem.  Bosses animation cancelling into face eating doom is a problem.  There are other problems.  Most of them are getting ignored because literally anything From does is considered 'difficulty' and awesome.  No matter how obviously it's actually "We've figured out that we can skip all kinds of shiat they'll put up with farking anything."  They're just handing you Sekiro bosses with you stuck in DS1 movement and without the toolbox to handle that properly.   "Difffffffficultyyyyyyyyyy!"  Yeah.

Hardly, just calling it as I see it.

Hades is a game with tight, responsive controls and accurate hitboxes.  Elden Ring is loose, slow, inaccurate and ackward by comparison

I bought it at release or right after. I put a few hours in, but I just could not get into it. It wasn't the difficulty as much as the lack of purpose. I never really knew where to go, and I guess that wasn't for me. Maybe the open world was too open.

Yeah, that's my other big complaint about Elden Ring is that It eschews all kinds of RPG conventions.  A bunch more NPC quest givers and some waypoints would improve the game immensely.  It honestly feels lazy not to have them.  But From software fanbois will say its 'a feature' not to have them in the game.

TBH it being open world is it's weakest point.  The insistence on making everything open world is one of the worst gaming conventions of the decade.

From... who, exactly?

I mean, I guess the creativity of the visual design is pretty good, but generally speaking the impressive thing about DS's visuals is how they're matched directly to gameplay elements (e.g. that thing you see off in the distance is an actual place you can go rather than a skybox element, that random articulated limb on the thousand-odd monstrosity is an actual in-game thing with a hitbox that can clip you and ruin your farking day, the fact that the boss is made of skeletons is because it literally has skeletons drop off of it, not just to look metal).  No one's giving the games credit for the visuals in themselves, they're fairly generic genre staples for the most part.

I mean, like, I wouldn't diss the work of the artists or anything, by itself the art is serviceable enough.  But the impressive part here is that 'serviceable' is extremely literal, in that basically everything rendered in game is actually in service of something.  Sometimes the game's lore/plot, but most frequently in the form of that big generic knight not being intimidating aesthetically, but because you know the intimidating visual design actually means it can and very much will kick your ass with its generic farking sword a dozen times before you even figure out how to successfully run through the level to avoid confronting it like the coward you are, to a much greater extent than less intimidating-looking foes.

// Seriously, the Black Knights have almost zero visual creativity, but any DS player who claims to not find them memorable is farking lying to your face.  I still have nightmares, and they are not bosses.

Second only to calling everything an RPG.
Why? Because the game lets us see the numbers, even though we have relatively little control over them? Big deal. Computers think in numbers. When you beat up a hooker to get your money back, that hooker has hiat points. Your cricket bat does 1d10 damage.

GOTY for me is Monster Hunter: Rise -- Sunbreak. I played the base game in '21 on switch, but Rise was released on PC in Jan '22, and the Sunbreak expansion hit in June. Highly recommend. It's good for several hundred hours of monster stabbing.
