It shows on multiple issues. The people show one preference, these fundie politicians vote otherwise.

Although Garcia is identified as Catholic in the Pew count, perhaps see also this thread from earlier today.

That's deliberate. The evangelical and Catholic Churches have specifically targeted and helped promote candidates that reflect their interests. That's a lot of tax free money to buy election results....and they've been at it now for a while. Authoritarian christian clergy have flat out bought state elections, taken over school boards and eaten local Republican party offices.  This survey just shows how effective that long term plan has been.

Congress is far more Christian, and religious overall, than today's general population.

Name one thing about anyone in Congress that is Christian.

Church is the people, man.  This is how Christianity is practiced in the USA today.

Hating gay people? That seems to be the 11th commandment.

No, Jesus didn't say anything about gay people at all. Right wing Christians only believe in the Old Testament (cherry picking even that ) and violently oppose everything Jesus supposedly stood for.

This is a great example of how Americans are psychotic. Overall participation in religion is decreasing but anyone campaigning as an atheist or even an agnostic is committing political suicide

Allegedly.  It's like when people say the media is liberal.  Well I don't see them telling people to go snort heroin and take off their clothes in public!  Except maybe Democracy Now, which is the only organization as extreme as OAN or Fox.

No, given the history and current rhetoric of modern christians I'm gonna have to say that "hating gay people" is the 11th commandment.
They really hate gay people.

There's a lot of ways in which Congress doesn't reflect America. This is by design, since it was explicitly created to keep white male oligarchs in power.

The Republican congressional delegation is a staggering 99% Christian, with the rest Jewish or unknown.

The unknown one doesn't want to show their religious affiliation in fear of what the 99 % of his colleagues will do to him once they find out..

Uh, this. They've been doing it for decades. Since the 1950s. At least.

The lone member of Congress who describes herself as religiously unaffiliated is Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona

She actually spent years as a Catholic who sporadically, and unpredictably, defied and argued against Catholic doctrine, and occasionally held out for special accommodations before coming back into the fold; then eventually declared herself unaffiliated.

/not really

With the exception of the whole no taxes thing*, that describes any political group in the country.

*We really need to start taxing "churches" that get involved in secular issues.

Congress is filled with talking corpses. It tends to skew the data towards "stuck in the 80s" and that's when the conservative movement really took off.

It doesn't mean the crossshaggers are gaining ground.

2023-01-04 4:04:12 PM
Congress doesn't represent America in any way except our advertising ideals. Hell, they probably don't represent themselves.

They represent themselves the way everyone thinks they OUGHT to be. (this isn't an original idea with me, btw, I found confirmation in "Collective Illusions" by Todd Rose)

The vast majority of people are not especially Christian; but they think all their neighbors think they are, so they behave as if all their neighbors are more Christian than they are. They aren't especially racist, but they think all their neighbors are racist, so they behave more overtly racist than they might otherwise believe because they want to fit in more with the neighbors. And since all the neighbors are doing and thinking the same thing, it's an endless self-reinforcing spiral. Rose opens his book with an example of a really "Christian" church-driven community that was ultimately found to be driven by the attitude of a single, loud, hostile woman. She set the tone by making more noise than anyone else, and passive acceptance plus a desire to fit in kept everyone else in line.

Politics is just society in macrocosm. They pander to the loudest, noisiest elements because the assumption is that anyone else would say something if they didn't like it--right? So we must WANT "Christian" politicians who favor loose gun restrictions, harsh abortion laws, and close ties with Russia, because that's all they hear.

And don't bother telling me "o but we do tell them! all the time!" You do not. If people had the courage of the convictions I see online, DC would be a smoking ruin. We ALL want to fit in with society and not make waves and take the path of least resistance. The ones who are out there waving gunz and dead babies on pikes are the ones they hear.

Hate to tell you, but the clergy lied to you about Jesus being about love and justice. It is the devil's promise to say "Believe I am God and love me and I will reward you with Heaven, otherwise I will cast you into a lake of fire for eternity, regardless of what you did in life."

Belief in Jesus is the belief in evil.

Having already contributed to this thread once, I will go on to say that this represents the "real" America: people who claim to be religious but aren't, actually. Both Republican politicians and the assholes who vote for them.

Most Republicans from both groups are as religious as I -- an atheist for 30 years -- am. They just don't have the balls to admit it. But their actions and public statements are what they really are: racist, stupid people who like Jesus on paper but wouldn't tolerate him for a minute in reality. The first time he told one of them to vote for universal healthcare or to let any immigrants come into the country with few restrictions, they'd be calling him a woke communist groomer, among other things.

What most religious people really worship is power.

2023-01-04 4:35:41 PM
I mean, literally no one under 18 has any representation in Congress. For instance. And how many poor people are in Congress, again?

Congress will never be truly representative. It'll always be older and richer than America. And that means it'll likely be more conservative, whiter, and male-er. And with that comes religion, specifically Christianity.

This isn't me defending the system. This is me pointing to why it's like this. (Ignoring the obvious anti-atheism streak we also have in this country, of course.)

This is my anecdotal opinion.

Generally speaking, the non-religious people I know had a religious upbringing, but thought through it all and rejected the premise. So, they are on the spectrum of "critical thinkers". They think through stuff, which in turn, they see so many multiple points, perspectives, and political positions. They make their decisions on multiple inputs. By electing someone based on their religiosity alone doesn't make sense for someone thinking it all through.

However, many of the non-religious don't vote with the fervor of a religious person, that oftentimes will votes on single wedge issues, like abortion for example (or guns, as that seems to be a form of religion for some, imo).

And, like most of America, the majority of them are either giving it lip-service or otherwise just going along doing the minimum because they're too stupid to question what they were taught in Sunday School.
And the few that actually practice and wholeheartedly believe apparently never got around to reading the New Testament.
