Weird that a character we don't even meet in the game ranked in the top three.

The rent Yusuke is too damn high!

Klivian: The rent Yusuke is too damn high!

I just finished playing through the game for the first time a couple weeks ago.  Yusuke is the only party member I didn't get to Rank 10, and he saw almost no time in my party.  It wasn't intentional.  I just liked every single other character more (or they were more useful in battle) than Yusuke.

I really want to experience this game, but my current laptop isn't up to the task of running it.

I have two options.

1. Watch highlights on Youtube.

2. Wait for my laptop to die so I can replace it with a better one.

Thoughts?  I've heard it's quite long, which at my age is no longer a purely positive thing.

I truly don't understand this game and at this point, I'm afraid to ask.

I reviewed persona 5 as persona 4 on crack. If you liked 4 you will also like 5.

Also Ryuji was my best friend.

A high rating to the genki girl flexible gymnast who wears a combat outfit consisting of a black leotard with thigh highs and stiletto heels should be utterly unsurprising.

It's absolutely worth playing, but it is certainly long. My first play clocked in around 95 hours, not using a guide and only minimal grinding (which really wasn't that bad).

If all you want is the story, there's a half-decent anime adaptation (ones for P3 and P4, as well).

Xbox Series S consoles go on sale pretty often and they'll run this game just fine. It's a good casual gaming option for me.

Switch is excellent for P5 (and soon P3/4).  It runs well enough, and portable mode is great for the few grindy parts.

That's another good option too, especially if you want to go all portable you have the option for the cheaper Switch Lite.

Game Pass is something I love on the Xbox side though. Lot of good games that I can play for cheap.

I just finished re-playing Persona 5 Royal thanks to game pass.  Holy hell, the game drags on for far too long once you max out all personal and confidant stats, leaving nothing to do but gym and jazz club visits for a whole month.

The taxi driver at the end (no spoilers) was super weird too.

Ryuji certainly has a lot of enthusiasm, but I can see how he'd be considered the worst of the lot because he can't stop blabbing in public and giving away their secret identities.

Couldn't stand Akechi in pre-Royal, and they made him an even bigger dick in Royal.

/No, I don't really have a favourite... aside from maybe Morgana because I like cats. Even though Morgana keeps insisting he isn't a cat.

I enjoyed the hell out of Yakuza: Like a Dragon. I liked Yakuza Like a Dragon because it was 40-somethings like me having various midlife issues and the craziness of eh, at our age let's be role-playing game heroes on the red-light district streets of Yokohama, crossing Final Fantasy with Saints Row's criminal zaniness to HOLY FARK THAT'S DARK AND VIOLENT moods, as well as the latter's memorable crew.

So I was looking if there was something similar aside from the beat-em up previous Yakuzas. Persona V was suggested.

It should be up my alley. Yahtzee Croshaw, who I usually agree with, loves this game. On this, he despises anime (I'm not fond of it myself), cringes at the teenage stuff and Japan weirdness (yep) and hates JRPGs (Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger were incredible; everything else until YLAD was bloated or drama garbage to me). Yet it managed not to annoy him and ranks among his favorite games, listing it for it's story and characters strength.

The 90-hour likely minimum to beat is scaring me off, even though a Cyberpunk 2077 or Fallout 4 completionist run can clock around that, and I did every side quest in YLAD that it was just over 100 hours when I finished it after playing it over the fall months. And I've done Mass Effect as good/evil/neutral Shepard (OK I cut corners with evil Shep by changing class and just going pure evil from a main neutral build).

Just 90 hours with anime teens ... IDGAF if they look like Hot Topic emos and pro wrestling fan kids (admit I was both in my teens) trying to have a fun time in weird as hell Japan with added psychedelic alternate dimension, it's still a lot of time for potential kawaii BS to show up and turn me off.

/Valkyria Chronicles 4 is my other consideration before Steam sale ends. Anime WW2 turn-based RPG? Well, I do like war films and XCOM ... and it's cheaper than Persona V.

I usually get burned out on super long games, but P5 is incredibly well paced for how long it is.

Honestly, the kawaii stuff is dialed back to where it might be there from time to time but the tone is pretty dark throughout and the kids are mostly just trying to adapt and survive in it.  The characters feel largely well-lived in with a good degree of depth.  At the risk of mild, early game spoilers, the first boss is a declining into middle aged man obsessing over teenaged flesh and engaging in abuse and implied at or near rape, and it's not played as funny or kawaii, it's vulgar and awful and hateful.  Sets the tone pretty early, and while there's some skipped beats throughout it stays pretty consistent.

As said above, super long game but doesn't feel as long as it is, and my runtimes tended to actually clock at around 120 hours.  It drags in a few areas, but is largely paced very well.
