I'd prefer a real health care system instead, but you have to take what you can get.

You want the healthcare system to pay for children's toys?

I always knew the generosity of Bills fans would be repaid tenfold. If you scroll through the list of the donations you see every NFL team or close to it.

By the way, sports gang, there's a Farker in Buffalo who could really use your help in a fundraiser.  Hamlin's cause is a good one, but our friend Mr. Fuzzypaws has lost just about everything.

It's getting me more than anything else since last night. Watching all these messages flood in from everywhere. Knowing in the back of my head that the Bills Mafia started this trend, and to watch it come back...is...overwhelming.

I've never understood this. Yes, we're the richest country in the world, but honestly, this guy is (or was) in critical condition and does not care about his charity. It's better than tots and pears but you're donating to a charity run by millionaires in a billion-dollar league.

He's a second year player who was a 6th round draft pick. The charity is for toys for the daycare his mom works at. He is not a millionaire. Calm down.

I have found that the need to do SOMETHING is as hard wired into the primitive part of our brain as is the need to squirrel away supplies when there is a possibility of bad weather. I see this over and over again, both locally and on a national scale, human beings in general are empathetic and charitable. It may be the age old custom of taking food to a bereaved family, putting together a parade to wish a terminal child Happy Birthday (as happened here recently), donating to funeral or healthcare costs, or anything else but doing something charitable seems to make some of the hopeless feelings go away. In this case, Hamlin does not need funds to pay for medical care, that is covered. Being able to donate to his charity is the next best thing.

I think Christmas for the kids is taken care of for a long time coming.

Hate to break it to ya...he's a millionaire, league minimum for a first-year player that is on an active roster is $705,000, if he's a second-year player he's already earned over a million, hence a millionaire (before taxes)

I agree that it would be a great use of some of the funds.

When Mom retired after decades as a gym teacher and 5 years as a track coach (only 5 years because most of her teaching years were before Title IV passed) her final gift to the school was an AED. It was used once when a parent had a heart attack watching a basketball game. He lived.

Actually, it's mean to say because kids are gonna get toys...

But this guy's life might now be ruined. We don't know. We HOPE not. Hopefully this winds up with the best results, which see this guy back on the field.

But it's possible that he's eventually going to need outside financial support (because it's the NFL...), and I just hope people remember that if it comes to pass.

Iirc NFL pensions kick in or after your third year. If, for example, this guy has brain damage from a lack of oxygen, every cent his family has will be gone soon.

In other sports, I'd assume being injured on the field would kinda count toward a full pension, and the medical bills would be paid by an outside entity... buuuut, it's the NFL...

True, but it all depends. I wouldn't rule it out if this ultimately is tied to the timing of the hit and not some sort of underlying condition, and assuming he hasn't suffered damage from oxygen deprivation.

Even mentioning that bastard Chris Pronger (I don't have qualms saying that, he was a dirty player and fark him) he played at least a decade longer after his somewhat similar incident.

Yeah, on Pat McAfee show they talked about how 4 hockey players had the same injury over the years and 3 of them had an underlying condition like irregular heartbeat or something. All of them survived.

People don't realize how incredible the circumstances have to be for this to happen. At full physical exertion your heart is around 130bpm or more, the rhythm has to be hit at so precise a timing for it to happen that we are talking milliseconds of windows for it to happen, add in the fact that the location and impact also has to be pretty precise. It's literally a 1 in a million shot. Probably more.

If that's the case for him I do hope he shuts it down. Even if the problem can be *fixed*. Whatever it is with this guy, if anything is wrong that contributed I hope that they find it.

I had a coworker who had some problem involving his rhythm and they basically went through the artery in his leg and went and burned/killed tiny bits around his heart in order to get everything to fire on time.

Just spoke with Dorrian Glenn - Damar Hamlin's uncle - who said his nephew is on a ventilator but he's improved to 50% oxygen needed after being at 100%. He's still sedated but main focus is recovering to breathe on his own & healing lungs.
