New Jersey is a bit like the East Coast's California.  It's a place where immigrants establish themselves and build their lives.

Put it together, and like California, you have the losers shuffling off to other states, blaming immigrants and yuppies for ruining their home.  "I moved out of there to REAL America.  It's so expensive and crowded, nobody can afford it!"

Spent 6 months living and working in New Jersey.

To be honest, once you get outside of the New York/Philly spillover, the rest of New Jersey is a fairly nice state.

According to more mainstream sites, nobody really knows the impact on those installations off the UK coast because an environmental study has not yet been conducted.   The turbines could be halted during migratory periods.  Painting a blade a dark color can frighten birds in avoiding the blades.

Meanwhile, coal and oil extraction and combustion kills many more birds (and other wildlife).  Last I checked, puffins do not like to swim around in oil spills or breathe emissions.

I have friends in western New Jersey.  Rolling hills, rural, nice house backing up to woods.  I've never been there without seeing deer walk through their property on their way to and from the woods.  Haven't seen a bear yet, but they tell me it's not uncommon for them to walk through, too.  Very peaceful to visit them.

OTOH, I also have friends in Hoboken, and when we visit them, it's the typical Jersey stereotypes on the turnpike and roads, and yes, the smell of industry is always there.

Two different worlds.

/side note - was on the NJ turnpike twice this week.  I have family in New England, and the one thing I used to be able to count on was the tidiness and frequency of the service stations/rest stops on the turnpike.  At least half of them have closed in the last two years, and some of the signs haven't been updated yet.  So you have to pee and the last sign said "Next service station 5 miles" and  you're like "yay!" and then you come up to it and it has a big "CLOSED" orange sticker on it.  That's not cool, New Jersey.

Paulsboro Mayor Gary Stevenson, who retired from an Exxon research facility associated with a nearby refinery in 2015, said a combined workforce of 2,000 at the joint facility's heyday has now dwindled to a few hundred.
"All those good-paying jobs have gone bye-bye," Stevenson said.

He expects the new wind facility at the port will help revive the town's economy. "With all the stable jobs it's going to create in the middle of town, we're probably going to open up another diner. And the hardware store is going to be better."

Defining the success of a blue collar NJ town by the number of functioning diners is...actually, probably pretty accurate.

How does that work with PTO arrangements, where you have one pot of leave and use it for vacation, illness, whatever.  Sick leave, unless it has very draconian doctor verification requirements, seems like just a more complicated PTO system.

I haven't been at a company where that is an issue. It just ensures that you have at least 40 hours of paid time off for sick leave. That includes temp positions if they last long enough.

It's stupid.  For short periods of time, there's never any verification that you're actually sick (and suggesting that people do that apparently gets a bunch of people's panties in a twist)... so there's really no need to have separate sick time.  It essentially just becomes vacation time.  And since it's not 'earned' (but given), the company doesn't have to pay any time left.

Which is why most companies these days don't have separate sick time.

So unless a state mandates it (none do to my knowledge, although some municipalities do), there's no reason to have it.

It guarantees it for virtually everyone. I don't use that word lightly either. Waiters and waitresses? Covered. Cashiers? Covered. Minimum wage workers? Covered. Seasonal workers? Covered. Jobs for a company with less than five employees? Covered. Supervisors and managers? Covered.

Employers may only require medical documentation where the employee uses earned sick leave for three or more consecutive days or where the employee's need to use earned sick leave is not foreseeable and the employee seeks to use such earned sick leave during a blackout period.

Yeah, Hope Creek (pictured in article) and Salem (on the same island) are both up and running. Best guess is that when they said "shuttered coal and nuclear power" they meant "(shuttered coal) and nuclear power."
