I mean sure, it sounds like a more environmentally friendly way to go if they can make it economical.

But it's the same damn protein. At what point do you have to stop calling something vegan? Say we can reprogram yeast to exactly create beef protein. Are they still gonna call that vegan?

Is cheese made from human milk vegan?

That's nice.

Still not eating vegan cheese.

Ehh.  Maybe.

I know enough Sciencey stuff to understand that Casein does what they say.  It's the genetically engineered Yeast that we need proved to us is safe.

I think it depends on if the human is vegan...?

From what I understand, it comes down to whether the cells/proteins/whatever originally came from an animal.  If yes, it's still considered not vegan, though is "ethical" meat.  Standard lab-grown meat falls under this category.  Since the bacteria likely had to originally be programmed using animal cells, probably same category.  But the vegan community as a whole is having a hard enough time with that first one.  Don't think we'll get even close to a consensus on bacteria generated proteins.

Me, I don't care where it comes from as long as it tastes good.  Except almonds... screw almonds.

Problem is, yeast is alive.

REAL vegans will not partake, lest they be killing yeast.

Well, it stands to reason that yeast cast shadows, even if I've never seen it.

I think the rarest cheese is made from Serbian Donkey milk. Called pule, IIRC, but I done got an image to prove my credentials.

This is an ad.

And not a good one, either. "Precision fermentation 'could end the climate crisis'" is such a bullshiat heading that I can't even begin to froth at it. Never mind the simple, obvious issue that they've bred a genetically-modified yeast strain that produces casein, but fails to answer the question "...from what?"

When a brewer adds yeast to make beer, they're adding a micro-organism that consumes sugars available in the wort or mash and turns them into carbon dioxide and alcohols. What is the yeast consuming to produce casein (C18H125N220O39P)? What else does it produce? Is the yeast strain viable in the wild?

The article claims they feed it "sugar and oxygen." Where are they getting the nitrogen and phosphorus? Or that much hydrogen? Glucose (C6H12O6) has nowhere near enough hydrogen for that reaction's proportions without dispensing a lot of carbon in the process, even if they're adding water into that equation.

There's bullshiat here - I'd be curious to find out what their waste products look like, and where they're going. Even a perfect reaction would require a shiatload of supplemental nitrogen and hydrogen, and "sugar and oxygen" aren't providing any farking phosphorus at all.

There's often a reason that things are rare.

I half wonder if that's going to turn out better than I ever imagined and I'll just feel SO dumb.  I could not bring myself to try any nut milk for the longest time because the idea just wigged me out but let me tell you something.  I did finally try it.  Big fan.  Same thing with vegan hot dogs.  Only difference is I'll probably buy beef hot dogs again... not sure about milk.

Another are those nice little crunchy crystals inside the cheese you get with the really aged cheeses.  Figure that out, I'll give it a go.

Indeed, donkeys just don't lactate as much as cows/sheep/goats.

Calcium lactate? I think they can do that already. It's a matter of time/moisture loss, a high enough calcium concentration - an issue for cheeses already when they're made of ultrapasteurized milk - and lactic acid which basically means having lactobacillus in your culture.

Not true. Vegans must eat nutritional yeast because it's the only vegan source of B12.

Frankly, dairy always involves a lot of processing.  It's just that certain methods are older than others.
