Should have tried it someplace like Chicago or Philanthropic, where the tickets are legendary.

Bozeman can suck my dick. Limited parking for a construction site and the ONE curb they didn't paint red.

I'll pay that when I get around to my tolls in PA and TX.

The government doesn't like competition, kiddo.

The coastal city of Santa Cruz is about 55 miles (88.51 kilometers) south of San Francisco.

Thanks KTVU, that's the kind of attention to relevant details we needed in this story.

At least they told us where the hell this happened.

A lot of local news stories don't even reference the state name, assuming that either a) no one outside of Bugtussle AR will read the article; or 2: Everybody knows where Bugtussle is.

Well its not like you can live in SC on a paycheck from Kinko's, not unless you have like 30 roommates in a two-bedroom apartment.

Most all parking tickets are a scam

Especially infuriating if the town in question is named something like Springfield, Washington, Winchester, Franklin, or Bristol, of which there are dozens of throughout the English speaking world. A lot of times the article is so short I can't get a grasp to even figure out what COUNTRY it took place in because the dipshiat paper is called The Metro Gazette or some other non-indicative name.

Nor anyone. The one biggest fatal flaw in his cunning plan.

Wow, with all the effort he put into the scam, it seems a trivial matter to go that extra distance to copy an actual ticket - it doesn't look very hard and he probably could have milked the scam for a couple months.

"Unlawful use of a computer" is one of those crimes that should not exist. It's a bit like if you charged someone with 'unlawful use of a pen' because they wrote a bad check. But computers were new and scary, and movies like WarGames sparked an irrational fear in the olds. And DAs love the opportunity to stack as many charges as they can.

The fraud charge should be enough.

Unfortunately, in a real city, parking tickets are part of the cost of doing business. I generally pay all mine at vehicle registration time unless I'm on my fifth one. They tow the sixth unpaid. I get his with expired meter =$45 plus longer than two hours = $45. So $90 bucks getting back to your vehicle ten minutes late. F*ckers.

2022-12-26 5:51:54 PM
I routinely get that double ticket.

If he's smart there will be no way to link him to the web site. But that wouldn't be easy. KYC laws mean you need to set up an LLC in one of two states that allow an LLC owner to be anonymous (your attorney is the registered agent).

Moving the money from the LLC to you is a hassle but not that terribly hard.

At first I completely agreed, but then I had a think. Committing a crime using a gun is often a charge, since it makes the crime more effective. Using a computer could similarly make this fraud more efficient and effective ( versus old school printing press). Yeah, still a stretch but perhaps this is the reasoning originally intended

They say that he used QR codes, but in the image with the fake and real tickets, the fake one didn't have a QR code.  Only the real one did.

So did the reporter screw up and  mix up the two tickets?

And hell, the two didn't even look remotely alike.  I was better at forging stuff when I was still in high school.

Yet, somehow, it's legal to send all kinds of fake bills to my real business for "internet listing services". No matter how many times I explain it to my bookkeeper, she keeps asking "should I pay this?" No. Every single time the answer is no. I should really get in on this scam.

The fraudster had an interesting problem. I don't think he was trying for a FORGERY. He was trying trickery. There are a few things that make it look official at a distance, and at a glance, but he wanted to avoid claiming to be law enforcement or posing as an official, which would bring a whole slew of charges.

He relied on people (let's be honest... tourists) ASSUMING that they had done something wrong and ASSUMING that they had been caught by law enforcement, but he was careful not to claim it or state it. That is good enough to keep things at the probation level and keeping this guy out of jail and prison. Probably.

It also makes him look like a stupid kid rather than a criminal mastermind, which will get him a lot of sympathy along the line. .. and especially in Santa Cruz.

Sometimes, things like this are considered "lesser included" crimes.  Yes, they are among the charges, but they don't really make that much difference when sentencing comes around.  It's like "Blue on black, tears on a river, push on a shove..."  It mostly becomes a negotiating tactic for plea bargaining.

I'm not a big fan of the idea that justice becomes just a high-stakes game of poker where the winner is the one who can bluff better.
