Aw, sad to hear. It's a good dish, and I think more importantly, one of the several very accessible dishes for folks new to Indian cuisine. Kinda curious how large the percentage is of non-Indians whose first experience was either chicken tikka masala or tandoor chicken.

...

Might have to make a big batch to inflict on my West Texas -born MiL while she's in town. She's generally pretty chill and always tries new foods, so she may actually like it. Hell, she ate the crap out of some mujadara (yogurt sauce and all) last time she stayed with us.

Personally my first Indian thing was naan, but I have no idea how typical or not that may be

/unfortunately I have to be careful with Indian

I purposely didn't include naan because that really doesn't count. It's a delicious type of bread. Not liking that is, well...

The shish Mahal restaurant? What about Noodles and Panda? Pizza garden? Burger Lobster? Wendy Caesars? 5 In n Out (*snk*)?

Its a great dish, that's always cheap frozen in the supermarket whenever Thailand has the chicken flu.

Not that I wish them chicken flu, but I do like chicken.

Fair - I'm not sure I've met any naan haters

/not liking a specific flavor maybe
//but not not liking it at all
///barring the people that can't do bread at all of course

Love the dish.  When I make it it stinks up my house for days though.

He found a way to make chicken not taste like chicken.

Aw man... I just had chicken Tikka Masala for dinner tonight!

Like many others, it was the first Indian dish I ever had. I've sampled a lot of Indian food since, but Chicken Tikka Masala is still my favorite.

I'm sure the restaurant is tasty, and kudos to him for introducing many Brits to food with flavor, but I have to wonder how good it would be to someone who didn't have their first taste of Indian food there. The first place you eat a curry probably sets your standard for what it should taste like, but odds are it's not actually the best.

I think my first Indian food was pakoras, when I was 8 or 9. It was part of a meal with other dishes, but it's the only thing I remember from that first time, and they were farking delicious. My palate took awhile to appreciate other Indian dishes though, and butter chicken, which is quite similar to tikka masala, is still a favorite.

My mam was always making "curry" at home, but this was a curry sauce from powder that she used as a base, and then just added whatever limited spices she had to hand. I don't think it's a specific dish other than "I have four kids and a husband to feed after finishing work, this will do". Always looked forward to that for dinner, but as we discovered new spices at home it gradually got better. Cumin or turmeric weren't big things in rural Ireland as she grew up, as you might imagine.
Friends always liked coming over because she was always making something different than they would usually have at home, other than the picky eaters of course.

Tikka Masala was probably the first real recognizable curry dish I ever had, in a restaurant.

/Now mam makes a great biryani.

So one of my favorites Indian dishes that I thought to be an ancient (centuries) recipe, was invented just few decades ago in Scotland by a Pakistani guy with an Islamic sounding name???
Oh, the lie I've been living!!
