There's a new biodiversity pact?  The one the article is talking about is 30 years old.

I'm sure there's a reasonable and prudent explanation for this. And if not, just how many different owl species do we really need? I can't fill my gas tank with owls.

You'd think the gun wing of the party would be environmentalist, seeing as how there's no hunting without wilderness.

But, like the rest of the party, they are stupid.

If there is one thing the past ten or twenty years have taught me, it's that everything is a cultural war. And the politics you follow are cultural, worthy of death, unless you're on the losing side. Then it's someone else's fault for making you try to overthrow the government.

The people in charge of the right wing don't actually GAF - they just like it as a performative base juicer than involves killing shiat as a lagniappe.  It isn't mandatory*

While a lot of hunters have guns, most of the gun wing are not hunters. Well, not hunters of animals.

Yes, specifically on what can be used to murder and poison a country for generations after the war is over.

Also several provisions on human rights.

Is there any treaty/agreement for general "good of mankind" that the US either refused outright, got special riders, or waited several decades until they joined the rest of the world?

(Chemical warfare under the Geneva Protocol, I'm looking at you as the poster child for all 3.)

Did you mean to ask if there's any that the US has signed on to?  Because the thread is rife with examples of ones the US has refused already.

Some gun owning hunters can understand that protecting nature is in their own interests.

Rich farks who already own private hunting reserves don't give a Fark about other hunters.

And I think there's a lot of gun nuts who pretend they hunt but really  just go play at the range mostly, doing performative macho shiat to impress other totally not secretly gay fellas.

tembaarmswide: environmentalism doesn't have to be political but, the GOP insists on it.

Unfortunately, environmentalism DOES have to be political. It is political by nature because it states the interests of nature and non-human living things as being sometimes more important than human desires. It is political because it is against the whole edifice of exploitation that makes up the bulk of industrial society.

You can't save the environment "unpolitically" because to save the environment requires going up against entrenched interests and it requires opposing certain practices (bottom trawling for example) and sometimes entire industries (fossil fuels).
