I was gonna say this with the add on that conservative "humor" requires the listener to be "in" and the subjects being "out." Since they're right wingers that means mocking the marginalized, punching down.

In other words they find cruelty funny.

It's pretty simple.

Does a comic's regular routine include jokes that are honestly self-deprecating and allow for a mocking examination of viewpoints that he or she might otherwise hold dear? Or does the comic depend entirely on mocking others and holding opposing viewpoints up for ridicule without any attempt at self-examination?

If it's the first, it's honest comedy. You might not like the comedian, you might not find them funny, but that's a matter of personal taste.

If it's the second, you're dealing with an asshole bully who's found a way to make money being one by pandering to less eloquent and/or intelligent people who also happen to be assholes and bullies.

There's really nothing more to it than that.

Liberal humor is based on the ego.  Conservative humor is based on the id.

Liberal humor is about showing off your intellect.  Conservative humor is about triggering emotions.

Liberal humor is about clever wordplay and structuring the joke on multiple levels.  Conservative humor is about bypassing the intellect and smashing the endorphin button over and over again.

Liberal humor is often too clever for its own good because the joke teller over structures the joke.  Conservative humor often makes no sense because they don't try to structure it at all.

Comedy is based on highlighting incongruities. Obviously, different worldviews

This, for example, is a real live Republican joke:

                        A liberal, conservative, and moderate walks into a bar.
                       The hostess says "Hi, Mitt!"

It's based on the frustration conservatives(*) have that Romney isn't as fire-breathing right wing Trumpian crazy-pants as they'd like. Kind of like how Fark's own fauxgressives think Biden is damn near Hitler because Democrats won't get rid of capitalism. In other words, it's really only funny if you share that worldview. Hence, the selective laughter.

But it's still humor.  They don't laugh at a lot of partisan insult-humor aimed their way either; no, not even if it is deserved.

(*) I'd say the "kook-right", but modern day US conservatives are basically all kooks at this point.

I've posted this observation every time the subject comes up so some of you have already seen it before, but it bears repeating.

Ever hear that phrase, "It's funny cause it's true!"?

That's why conservative comedy isn't funny.

Plus the article is built on a misleading premise.

Since August, Gutfeld! has been consistently pulling in an average of over 2 million viewers a night, placing it well above late-night stalwarts like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

His show is on the Fox News Channel. That's about the same number of people that watch Fox News Channel. It's not like everyone is necessarily tuning in to specifically see his show. It's the same number of people that just leave the TV on Fox News 24/7.
