But if it's a sponsorship? Anything goes.

First of all, +1 for using the proper plural of "grands prix".

Secondly, this is less a "drivers aren't allowed to make political statements" rule so much as it is a "Lewis Hamilton in particular is not allowed to show any support for the LGBTQ community, the Black Lives Matter movement, or any other marginalized group which the FIA's wealthiest sponsors would prefer didn't exist" rule. Funny how they implemented this rule almost immediately after the retirement of the only other driver besides Sir Lewis (and the only White driver) who would go out of his way to intentionally violate this rule, as if to dare the FIA to punish drivers for not hating ethnic or gender or other minorities.

Planned Parenthood should sponsor a driver for that race. Just to see what FIA's excuse would be for not allow it.

They were way ahead of FIFA in this regard.

You could stop watching out of principle but, you won't.  They know it.

Not necessarily. I didn't watch a single second of the World Cup live (only saw highlights on social media or somewhere that wasn't Fox). I can live without watching F1 live.

Boycotted Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Miami. Decided to bail completely after 2019 but then the plague arrived. With Penske seemingly willing to let any IndyCar race other than the 500 die a painful death and the rise of Max and his unbelievably racist and dickish fanbase I'm very seriously considering converting to IMSA/WEC only.

/seriously. WTF is Roger doing?!?

That's a question that every Indycar fan needs to be asking.

And considering the excitement around IMSA (they had to make a reserve list for the Rolex 24 because of so many entries) and WEC with the new prototypes coming in; now seems like a really good time for anyone to check them out

I've been to F1, Indycar, and IMSA/WEC and IMSA/WEC hands down is the best as far as attending in person goes. Ticket prices are reasonable and you get access to the venue that would cost hundreds for Indycar and many thousands for F1 (usually paddock is included and pit is a little extra). You can usually can get a brief conversation in with drivers and crew members as they're genuinely happy for your attendance and support.

F1 on the other hand... scored trackside suite passes to last year's COTA race. Just getting to the track was a nightmare involving two shuttle busses and a mile long hike. Crowds were massive as were prices. The highlights were not getting covid and seeing Billy Joel perform.

Good thing the new chassis manufacturers are coming in 2050 right after the new naturally aspirated V8s from Pontiac, Packard, and AMC. Seriously

This.

A reveal to my Fark1 fam this offseason:

I'm white. My seven-year-old (adopted) son is Black. He's a car kid (Hot Wheels and such), and we love Lewis Hamilton. He also likes NASCAR at the diecast/play level, so you're for damned sure he's got Bubba Wallace in 1/64.

We watch every quali, sprint, and race, as well as all the meme reviews on YouTube I can find like F1ENDS, FP1Will, Dacha44, etc.

I want my son to love Lewis Hamilton for his amazing performance, but I'm sure he identifies with him as well. This is a current concern at this time in our lives, as he can't put words to the identity crisis he's experiencing when we're out and he sees other Black kids with parents that look like them.

To that end, I hope more drivers of color make it to F1 before Lewis retires, even if that means Lewis keeps driving as an elder statesman well beyond his prime.

Additionally, this is why I'm sad to see Seb Vettel leave the sport, and I hold out hope he returns a la Alonso, and hopefully on a competitive team.

I love F1, but don't believe I'll be able to share it with my son if it keeps courting theocratic dictatorships. Ironically, the increased American influence might help bring more ethnic parity (?) to the sport, although I don't know how much.

Based on this comment, I'm gonna check out IMSA/WEC.

Thanks.
