Those temps posted above are sans wind-chill. I'd say people are chilling out indeed.

/Thanks AB folks for the 'bomb cyclone'!

Windchill isn't a temperature Subby. It's an index and applies to exposed skin in the wind. For everything else you'd need to calculate a different correction. It is easily one of the most misused calculations out there.

Denver is crazy.  I went through there on a motorcycle this June, during the heat wave.  I pulled off the interstate on the west edge of town to get gas and lunch.  When I pulled into the truck stop, the gas that was left in my tank was boiling...

I experienced close to that once in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan. Lake Superior froze over that year and once it did the temperature plummeted. I think the worst it got  was -45F wind chill.

95°F in a metal container in direct sunlight?

Not good. But, uh, that's just called summer, even in the Rockies. Just 5 degrees short of the average. Usually August, yes, but all this globa wubba we stick our heads in the sand for...meh. new normal. Like the Colorado being empty. Ha. Hahaha ha.

More like 95 degrees in direct sunlight (although my bike is white, so that helps some) PLUS all the hot air from the radiator washing back over the tank, plus heat from the engine rising up into the tank.  Engine temps were definitely a little warmer in Denver than they were at lower elevations earlier in the day.

Thankfully after a meal stop we headed up into the mountains and went from 95 degrees to 70 degrees.  Unfortunately we eventually popped out the other side, back into 95 degree heat again...

Canadian born and bred. I can remember walking through -30 to -40°C and just ignoring it.

But the coldest I've ever felt, was sometime at O-dark-thirty on a winters morning, waiting at a shuttle bus site to get to work in Aurora, CO, in full view of the front range in the dark and a steady unrelenting wind coming off the same. My body heat was blown to Kansas by the time I stepped off the bus that got me there. A long, cold wait.
Even with the lights of Denver behind me, that sky was so worth that pain.

No, it won't. Jesus, is this a new "talking point"? Someone at work said that to me yesterday when I told him it was supposed to be, like, 10 here (OKC) without the wind chill on Thursday. The wind here on Thursday is supposed to be 40 to 50 mph, with higher gusts. And farther north, the wind is supposed to be worse.

No, it won't be 80. It will be motherfarking cold for about 2/3 of the country both Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, merely cold, though apparently there will be snow up north.

So, no, the temp will not swing wildly from 80 to -50. It never does.

I love living in Colorado, but I think my most brutal weather memory was in Fraser, walking to work when it was -34 and my car wouldn't start... the moisture from my breath kept rising with the warm air, and freezing my eyelashes together, so every time I blinked, I lost a couple more eyelashes.  I love the sky there, especially in the mountains, away from light pollution, where you can actually see the galaxy as it was meant to be seen, but I don't miss winter in the mountains since I've moved to the city.

Also, here's the headline for dum-dums who don't wear gloves in this weather: Frostbite within minutes

That's one reason why they publicize unusual cold like this, for all the idiots who walk around with a coat or even jacket, flip flops, no gloves. Then their car breaks down or they get in an accident and can't feel their fingers or toes within about 5 minutes because "it's not that cold." LOL

The snow is that powdery crap that doesn't stick together well

Well, I'm not looking forward to that. Especially since I was to be driving down to Phoenix from Denver on Wednesday to spend Christmas with my family (arriving on Thursday after an overnight stop in Albuquerque). But one of them pissed me off so much this weekend that I canceled the trip. So now I get to experience the coldest weather I've ever been in thanks to that farking moron.

Growing up in the San Luis Valley on a ranch was fun.  There where winter days of feeding the cows in -40 degree temps.  It would take ten minutes to get dressed and undressed before going out in that shiat

At least in my home town of Denver they're prepared to handle things like this. Here in Dallas the temp is going to get down to like 7 on Thursday evening and we'll all be waiting for the power grid to blow up again.
