Places not covered include rail facilities, as well as "any structure such as a filling station, service station or restaurant of 800 square feet or less that has a restroom located within such structure that is only intended for use by employees."

Way to give them guidelines on how big to build the next gas station...

Which is funny since all the truckers I knew down here in NC a few years ago couldn't stop talking about the "bathroom bill" our former governor enacted.  No wonder they were so bitter.

I thought it was less about not having a place to use the bathroom, and more about not being allowed to take the time to stop to use the bathroom?

We can't even get rail workers sick days and we'd rather break up their strikes. If they pass this after doing that, we need to be asking a lot of questions as to why.

FTFA: "The Trucker Bathroom Access Act, introduced Thursday by U.S. Reps. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) and Chrissy 'Hot Lips' Houlahan (D-Penn.), adds language to federal law to ensure such access while drivers are working."

I think I quoted that correctly.

No, they get to wait for hours at loading facilities without any access to bathrooms or other amenities.

Good, some warehouses put truckers through total bullshiat. They'll make truckers wait over 6 hours and even days to get a truck loaded or received.

Lindsay Graham supported the bill because he'd read the title and thought it was about him being allowed access to truckers' bathrooms.

In case you didn't know, and I didn't know until just recently, not all truck cabs are built the same way. Behold the sleeper cab:

You can tell the difference between a sleeper cab and a non-sleeper by how long the cab is. If it is just a short li'l thing then it isn't a sleeper. If it has junk in the trunk then there's something going on in there.

I can't believe places shipping and receiving freight are such big asshats that a law had to be written in order to force them to share their bathrooms with truckers.

Oh well in that case, problem solved. Stop whining, truckers!

On a more personal note:  I've definitely hooked up with truckers in those types of rigs. It still ain't a pleasant space.

Apples and Oranges.  Railroad employees are an insignificant number compared to the number of truck drivers in America.  I'm not saying railroads shouldn't be giving sick leave and I don't like union busting.  But, this is different.

You have gone off he deep end.

EXTRA sick days. They already have sick days and that railworker sh*t is way more complex than just that and you know it. Nobody got ratf*cked there. It was very typical union negotiations.

This is about denying people a place to sh*t.

Have you ever had to take a sh*t and you simply had to crap yourself because there wasn't a place to sh*t?

Having a place to take a sh*t should be a fundamental human right.

Prove me wrong.

Not just corporate profiteering.  Don't forget that the Hollywood unions and the CIO were desperate to not look communist-friendly in the '50s, and forced out the progressive unions willing to actually fight, which really hurt the union effort nationwide.

here to help: They already have sick days

Yeah, like three a year, and they have to schedule them days in advance.  So vomiting blood in the bathroom five minutes before a shift starts doesn't count, and the worker would be punished for trying to use sick leave.

Every single article linked to Fark about this subject that mentioned how much sick leave they actually get.

Those shipping facilities treat truckers (AKA the reason everyone working there has a job) like absolute dogshiat. When I got my CDL, I did about 2 months OTR and was done with it. I took a local job that involved a heavy manual labor component on top of driving the truck over putting up with that on a daily basis.

Wrong.

Congress split the bills in two, one that would enforce their current contract and another that would give them short term sick days. Guess which one passed and which one didn't?

2022-12-17 1:19:36 AM
And let's just say the railway workers got ratf*cked...

Why would allowing long haul truckers have a place to sh*t be anti worker?

Denying them that right would be anti worker.

It's like saying "How DARE you do something good when you didn't do this OTHER thing I think is good therefore STOP DOING THAT SECOND GOOD AND ALL OTHER GOOODS UNTIL ALL MY GOODS HAVE BEEN FULL IMPLEMENTED!!!"

The rail unions can always renegotiate again later.

That's what they do.

2022-12-17 1:21:25 AM
How about requiring them to be paid for the time they spend waiting at the yards?

I bet the whole bathroom situation would go away pretty quick if the drivers weren't forced to sit there waiting for a few hours.

2022-12-17 1:21:53 AM
I was going to comment but this thread went to hell early. Most places only have a single bottom of the barrel portajohn. Or maybe 2 actual heads inside , if you are lucky. The biggest problem is lack of parking outside of being at a truck stop. Unless one lucks into a half dead mall with a large carpark and a fast food place.

Whoever put their name on that bill is a smart motherfarker. Having that on your resumé is a huge bonus when dealing with any kind of trucking or transportation lobby (and there are a lot).

The point is that Congress didn't do anything to help the railroads, and this bill is only a good start to address systemic problems (assuming it passes).

And the railroad issue is a lot more complex than you are describing it.  The union contract only goes into place if all unions accept it.  Some did, some did not because it didn't address the lack of meaningful sick leave.  Instead of helping the railroads, Congress simply passed a law ordering the unions to accept the contract that only some accepted.

It really is. I come from autoworker stock.

Now if US railworkers have somehow only managed to get only three "sick days" per year then their union failed them. I'm guessing that is a pile of hyperbole though.

Even still... I am FAR more concerned about service and warehouse and gig workers right now.

THOSE are industries the union movement need to fight for.

Old powerful unions can help or keep selling their members out to capital like they did my mom.

Not subby and leave my mom alone.

I'm sorry. Do you have austerity on ignore?

That's literally what they did.

Thread about letting truuckers have a place to sh*t which is worker positive.

They literally invoked the railway sh*t and questioned why this was done... because the rail stuff didn't work the way they wanted.

NM Volunteer: And the railroad issue is a lot more complex than you are describing it.

Of course it is. I'm pointing out how it is being oversimplified to attack Dems just because "I'M SCARED AND ANGRY AND CONFUSED!!!"

It's unhelpful.

But capitalist "America" has a far deeper systemic problem than either of these issues. These are merely systems and comparatively mild ones.

It is hay for the FUD machines on either side yet only favors ONE side... the rich.

I'm sure you understand my frustration.
