no idea but I'm not sure I totally disagree with her.  They should still be able to vote though, mostly to piss off Republicans

My (very) unpopular opinion: women should have more choice and should have the option of removing genetic problems from fetuses via CRISP. Sure, it's sci-fi today. But in 100 years, we could have 0 people born with Down's.

Part of the reason Stephen lost it in that segment is the picture the production department chose to use was of his MIL.

Don't disagree with you. It would be an amazing advance in human evolution.

The concern though, is we lack necessary knowledge about what each gene actually does when turned on or off.
So far, gene therapy is only allowed for individuals already born.
The reason being is the gene edits can't be passed on to any future offspring. So if the therapy has dangerous or harmful unknown side effects, at least it won't be hereditary.

Take the Chinese scientist who modified the genes in twin girls to make them immune to HIV as an example.

https://www.science.org/content/article/crispr-bombshell-chinese-researcher-claims-have-created-gene-edited-twins

The reason it was and still is a huge farkup; is that if these two females get pregnant, they will pass those genes onto their offspring.
We don't yet know what else those edited genes controlled. They could mutate and produce an even more virulent version of HIV.

We just don't know.

Scientists finished mapping the human genome in 2003.
Nineteen years is nowhere near enough time for humanity to truly understand the power and danger of genetically modifying human embryos.

That's far from the real concern.

Of way, way more concern is that this technology would undoubtedly be expensive. Which means it's the rich that will have access to it - potentially forever. There's no limit to what they would attempt to do with it. And before long, there will be the engineered and the unengineered.

For the first actual time in human history, you will have two true classes of humans and we will never, ever be able to close that gap. The unengineered will be a permanent underclass with no hope of ever climbing the ladder.

I mean, they made a whole movie about this...

I don't buy it.  If you want to see what humans will do with gene editing technology just look at plants or dogs.  GM corn is amazing, but have you ever seen what a corn stalk looks like when it grows from a seed that was moved by an animal?  Without pesticides to kill competition and tons of fertilizer it grows into a scraggly little piece of shiat that is easily out competed by it's wild neighbors.  Dog breeds are cool, except they all come with baggage like non-functional nasal cavities, cancer, and messed up hips.  The modified folks will be on top up until there is a slight disruption and then they will be easily undone without modern civilization to prop them up.

I'm shocked by how many of those people I agree with. I get worried when I start agreeing with too many people on social media, but some of them are right.  Lee-Anne Goodman's belief that Will Ferrell isn't that funny is something I've thought since I first saw him on TV.

But David, Socialist Martial Artist is WRONG.  It's not the size of the dog that causes them to bark, it's the dog and its owner. Chica the Chihuahua was a good dog who never barked unless there was a good reason - like she was face to face with a Rottweiler.  I thought she was incredibly brave to do that, but she lived on the streets for a while before she was adopted and was a survivor.

KG is right though - I don't have any tattoos, but I'm still cool in my own mind.  Meghan Dvorak is absolutely right too.  I love spiders.  I had one take care of some sort of flies that came with some plants I bought one time.  I left the web alone and the flies disappeared - and then the spider did too.

The further down the list you go the more they're wrong though.

My own personal unpopular opinion is that Red Light Cameras are a benefit.  I drive through one all the time and have never been caught simply because I don't run red lights.  Meanwhile, the next intersections in either direction on that street have people running red lights all the time.  It slows everyone else down.  Instead of being able to go we are stuck waiting.

Down's is caused by the presence of two copies of one of the chromosomes in your cells, which seems like it would be much harder to "fix" than genetic issues which involve missing genes. Far easier to insert extra genetic material than to selective get rid of one copy (but not both!) in each of your cells.

/Plus those extra chromosomes pretty much already skewed the development of the body and brain in the earliest stages, by the time you can detect it it is likely already too late to fully correct/revert.

That is an interesting proposition.
Difficulty, at what age do we stop saving people from themselves?

Children are notoriously stupid. (See: Falling off bikes)
Teenagers are hormonal dumbf*cks with drivers licenses.
20 - 30's - Dumbf*cks with paychecks and booze.
30+ If you don't know gasoline is explosive, you deserve to die. And take your dumbass family with ya!

This joke was stolen from Chris Porter (Comedian). If you have Prime, look him up.

Because they like playing with them?

For the first few years my granddaughter was given boy and girl toys pretty evenly. She had Barbies and action figures. Matchbox cars and my little ponies. Baby dolls and Tonka trucks. Over time she just naturally gravitated towards the girl toys on her own.

in my experience, if the cat doesn't unspool the TP into a pile on the floor, they'll end up shredding it on the roll trying to do so.  better to be able to roll it back up than have to pitch it.

Also the cost of CRISPR tech is "almost" achievable for a garage hobbyist.  THAT should be the scary part though I do understand the overmonied, elitist concern.  Imagine Musk or TFG playing around...

Yes, sorry. I should have been clearer. CRISPR is shockingly affordable for what it is. But so's a scalpel.

Having the knowledge to use it well takes money.

If you want to get your cat to stop pulling at the TP, put the TP on a free standing TP holder. If your cat then pulls on the TP, the holder will likely fall over, scaring the cat so the cat won't want to do it again.

My unpopular opinion: 99.9% of peanut allergies are BS.  Your kid isn't allergic to peanut butter, he's just picky and you bought into the hype.  It's amazing that this peanut allergy seems to only affect white, middle-class kids in the US & UK almost exclusively.  There's no way in hell human evolution could suddenly produce so many kids w/an allergy to something that was harmless 20-30 years ago which the rest of the planet's population seems to have no issue with.

I'm not excluding ALL peanut allergies.  People have all sorts of allergies that could be life-threatening.  But being near-death just because a PB&J sandwich is present somewhere in a school building is utter bullshiat.

Buy better chicken. Sure, for a chicken balti or Thai chicken where the sauce will overpower the chicken you can buy the cheap stuff as it doesn't matter. If I'm doing a roast I'll buy the outdoor reared, corn-fed chicken for three times the price. You can taste the difference.

I've eaten chicken fresh killed of the backyard farm. It definitely has more texture (stringy) but no better flavor.

My better hot take: Anyone who orders chicken off a restaurant menu is probably a psychopath.
