Don't slight Baba Yaga, that winkled tittied witch once killed three men with a pencil.  And don't fark with her dog either.

Comedy's nearly a vacuum compared to drama everything else. I read the Pythons observing making people laugh was dangerous when it fails... real anger, threats even... versus a bad dramatic performance. Nobody gets beat up doing Romeo&Juliet poorly.

Sandler's consistently worked long enough for the few prominent awards that exist.

Sandler seems like a silly choice, yeah.

But don't forget: It's a meaningless award given to rich people. Who gives a shiat.

It's like getting upset about your favorite band not being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It affects nothing.

Per their own website it's reserved for:

The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters,

Are you saying that Adam Sandler hasn't had an impact on American society between the movies he's starred in or produced? Not a lot of people out there quoting or emulating his stuff? If you're saying it cheapens the award because he's not big on social commentary like Twain/Carlin/Stewart/Fey then you probably should have been complaining when Ferrell/Crystal/Martin have received it.

Lorne Michaels has extraordinary wit? Fark's favorite movie is Airplane! Surely you can't be serious?

Humor is much like music and art. Very subjective. I see no problem with occasionally throwing low brow humor a bone.

Mark Twain was the editor of Ulysses S. Grant's personal memoirs.   Adam Sandler makes fart jokes on TV.

Totes the same!

Interesting.  So this reminds me of Kevin Hart... he has his moments yeah, but he's not really one of my favorite comedians.  However, I've seen more than one comedy show that he's produced and I've felt like that for me personally his biggest contribution to comedy is just showing me all these new faces.  I wonder if Adam Sandler is similar.  He's made a million movies... maybe his biggest contribution in the end will just be bringing new talent into the fold.

I was actually watching some stand-up he did at the Improv in the late 80s just yesterday... he was actually kind of uniquely funny.  But yeah I was a little surprised to see the news about him getting the Mark Twain prize.

Paul Thomas Anderson "saw something."  Who knows.  Maybe Mark Twain would too.

This joke of giving Adam Sandler the Mark Twain award is funnier than Adam Sandler has ever been.

2022-12-14 9:44:35 AM
"Adam has created characters that have made us laugh, cry, and cry from laughing."

Wow. How did he find time between movies to do all that?

2022-12-14 9:58:33 AM
Anyone can complain about their pick for the prize, I decided to go to the source and ask Mark Twain himself using my wife's ouija board.  I asked his feelings on Adam Sandler's wit and the planchette in my hand started to shake and buzz making it hard to move to any letters and I just knew the spirits were angry yet I was determined to let Mr Clemens get his words out.  My wife asked what I was doing with her Ouija board and her new vibrator... So Mark Twain might not have shared any insight but I quite possibly gave him a happy ending, I am not exactly sure how any of that works.

2022-12-14 10:41:26 AM
No.

It's not that Adam Sandler has never been funny.  It's more that Adam Sandler has RARELY been funny.

Ironically his best work is all in dramatic roles.

Ferrel, Crystal and Martin are actually funny.

Ferrel has been funny doing satire on Saturday Night Live and his movies. Billy Crystal old stand up did it include social messages. Steve Martin has been a master absurdist and then a self important pompous ass, but at least he's funny doing it.

Random aside, if you're ever in the Hartford area, check out the Mark Twain House and Museum. Pay the few extra bucks for a historical actor to lead the tour. Lots of fun. And then wander next door to the Harriet Beecher Stowe house for their tour. Still my favorite luggage tag, that I got at the Twain House.

Yarp. Everybody here complaining is saying they don't find him funny, which is fine, but the award isn't for "funniest dude" it's for "comedian who had a big impact on modern comedy". On top of acting the dude has run a very financially successful production company for 2 1/2 decades and brought up a lot of new talent.

I came in here planning to defend Sandler.

But holy shiat, I didn't realize Brooks had never received the award. It just invalidates the whole thing. Not that I ever put much stock in the award anyway.

Brooks is a goddamn American treasure.

I'm certainly not equating Adam Sandler with God, but...even though I don't believe in God, I can't deny the impact God has had on society.

On a much, much smaller scale, that's what this award is. His impact and longevity in the realm of comedy are undeniable, whether or not you believe that he's funny.

2022-12-14 12:41:51 PM
There's no question Adam Sandler has done some funny stuff. Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer, etc. Lots of good stuff.

But none of it exactly clever or nuanced. This seems like a big stretch.

Sandler is well known in the industry as a great person to work with and for.  He's not pretentious.  That helps a lot.
He has explored drama, like with Uncut Gems, that also contained comedic elements.
Yes, he's known for low brow humor, especially in the 1990s.  In comedy though it's what gets genuine laughs and that's all that matters.  Not everyone can be Richard Pryor.

He's turned it down three times. But he has been honored by the Kennedy Center before, in 2009, so maybe he doesn't feel a need.

New talent?   Like Rob "I can't find work because I'm an unfunny right wing douche bag" Schneider?

At least Sandler loyal to his friends and a nice guy

Okay.  Forget Mel Brooks.  How about Don Rickles?  Or don't they give them posthumously?  Or Joan Rivers (same issue)?

Robin Williams refused it, so we can skip him.

What about Seinfeld?  I wonder if he also refused it?

Okay, this actually IS tough because the deserving people are actually all dead or alive but with tarnished images.
