Sigh. Fat suits have been a staple of movie/TV/stage comedy since each was invented. Fatties are just now pissed off?

Maybe instead of the suit they could have just fed Fraser a bunch of Pi.

They could have cast Rob McElhenney from It's Always Sunny in Philidelpia. He gained 50 pounds, just because he felt it would be funny. Then he lost it as quickly as he gained it.

Actually, fatties would probably have an even bigger problem with that.

Yeah it sucks, but at least it treats the character as an actual person and not some Farley-esque vehicle for food jokes and pratfalls. Baby steps.

I read one review of 1000 Years of Longing that called it fat shaming because of a scene where a character was sexually aroused by fat women. Evidently portraying fat people as desirable is now also a bad thing.

Merely pointing out that just because something is the way it has always been doesn't mean it's good or right, just that nobody currently cares about the people being harmed.

I get it. We're still probably a decade away from the public at large, and Fark specifically, seeing fat people as actual people, and not just walking excuses to be a complete asshole to someone without any social consequences.

A healthy actor in a fat suit is more likely to be able to handle the rigours of the daily shooting schedule.

It's the same reason you generally don't see people with disabilities playing people with disabilities.

And, of course, the more conventional actor is more employable and thus more likely to exist in the available talent pool in the first place.  You can't put a fat person in a 'thin suit' any more than a paraplegic can walk.

Eh, if you're making a tough drama about a fat person committing suicide due to the bullying and stigma, you probably shouldn't use a thin actor in a fat suit. The Penguin, not as big of a deal. Also, a great Onion headline.

My understanding is in the movie Fraser's character maxes out at 600lb but is not that big for the whole movie. So do you get someone that big and force them to lose weight over the course of production? That's like hiring someone with cancer who only has two years to live to play Walter White.

You lost the plot when you jumped directly to minstrel shows and tipped your hand way too soon.

The reality is, we do have plenty of media reflecting fat people as actual people, and fat people aren't the only ones who are the butt of jokes simply for existing in the form they do. We do it with smart people, dumb people, skinny people, buff people, beautiful people, ugly people, blacks, whites, asians, latinos, americans, europeans, tall people, short people, pretty much any demographic that has existed.

Minstrel shows featured unrealistic caricatures to visually mock black folk and further dehumanize them. Fat suits are designed to simply make someone look overweight.

They are not the same thing. Get over yourself.

Don't call them fat.  If you want to be politically correct, the appropriate term is morbidly obese.

Chrissy Metz (Kat from This Is Us) was signed on to the role with an initial plan to have her lose weight over the course of the show. It was part of the show's initial character arc for her and her husband - they met at a weight loss retreat - and at some point they decided do abandon that and just let her be her and wrote the rest of her story around her husband losing weight and how that affected her and their relationship.

A lot goes into acting, but I think saying that an actor needs to have control over their emotions and bodies would be a pretty uncontroversial statement. Being obese to the point that you have mobility issues tends to be a pretty clear that someone has neither of those qualities.
