In related news, the Smothers Brothers are still alive.

I never got to watch the Smothers Brothers when I was a kid. The family would watch Ed Sullivan, and when it ended it was time for me and my brothers to go to bed. :(

Not a lot of show dates on that tour. I guess the logistics of moving the vat of chocolate are overwhelming.

First paying job as a writer - I believe he acted in several tv shows well before this....bit parts.

Holy crap.  I thought this was a joke headline and that their family were exhuming them and moving their caskets to another Cemetery.

Well, yeah. Nepotism and all that.

They came back for a while, but the era of the variety show has passed, and with it the demand for mildly amusing musical numbers between acts.

Yes, I loved the Yo-Yo Man and the banter... But it's done.  Regardless, I hope the nostalgia-craving crowd gives them a decent run.

It's nice to see society throw the Boomers a bone. They get so snippy if they aren't lionized every 14 minutes.

Youth culture dominates wherever the youth spend money.  At least, whatever reflection of it the current crop of 30-somethings is producing for them.

With some time and perspective you'll realise how crappy it was, even as you unironically crave cheap echoes of it.

Because old people aren't dumb, people are dumb.  And generally self-centered.

You mean an entire lifetime in their shadow isn't enough?

How much time and perspective before you gave up?

You've spent your entire lifetime in the shadow of a comedy sketch show that aired on CBS from 1967-69?

My first exposure to the Smothers Brothers was when they did 6 String Orchestra for the Harry Chapin tribute that aired on PBS.

Heh. I bet the Smothers got a little schadenfreude out of Bill's series of unfortunate events.

When I was a kid, a local affiliate showed Laugh In and Hee Haw reruns back to back. I assumed they were the same thing so I turned off the TV after watching Knight Rider. I couldn't have been more wrong.

Lets see if they have the balls to be political again.  The people who lauded it from them before, when they were all young, have largely transformed into MAGAts.

I grew up in the 60s. I was a huge fan, but only knew them as a goofy duo. I was an adult when I learned how big and influential they were in the counter-culture/protest movement.

Proof of a liberal bias in media.  Their show was #1 when it was cancelled because they were against the war.

If you're the least bit interested in the history of their television show, I highly recommend the book, "Dangerously Funny."

They also put Bob Einstein on the road to stardom. He was Officer Judy on the show. Later he became "Super Dave" Osborne. RIP Bob.

My dad came home from a business trip once and said, "You know those two brothers on TV you kids like? Tom and Dick something or other?"

"The Smothers Brothers?"

"Yeah. Those guys. They're nice guys." (aside: my dad liked everybody, so of course they were nice guys).

"What makes you say that?"

"Oh, I was on the elevator and struck up a conversation with the other guy. He asked me if I knew who he was. When I told him I didn't, he introduced himself. I told him I don't reallly get their kind of humor, but you kids like them. Anyway, we had a nice talk, and then he said he wanted to introduce me to his brother, so I had a few drinks with them and their manager."

"Nice guys."

He was totally unimpressed by the whole thing, because he wasn't really a fan of theirs, but he wanted to let us know they're nice guys.
