It's just emulating the PS environment, instead of being a real port isn't it?  32GB of ram is farking ridiculous.

ram is cheap.. I've had 32 gig in my desktop for over a decade now. Unless that's the video ram requirements

The PS5's architecture has some important differences from a PC. In particular, a LOT of storage bandwidth. They might well need extra RAM to cache data.

That's super cheap in a desktop though.  And who actually still owns one?

I got 16 in my most recent laptop purchase.  Everything I read on the internet said you didn't need more than that at the premium price it would run you.

I put 64gb in my NUC Ubuntu server because it wasn't that much more expensive than 32.

Me too but 16g works fine. I'd like to add more but I actually don't know what kind of memory would be compatible with what's already in there.

Two windows of Firefox open with 27 tabs across both of them, plus virt-manager running. And my OS loads in to a RAM disk thus the odd 62.72GB.

64GB is my base line for all of my PCs now. 128GB for my personal servers.

This.

Most of the stupid bullshiat we have to put up with these days -- half finished buggy games with broken/missing/canceled features -- is mostly studios trying to get games to run at 4K at 60fps reliably on systems that are in no way optimized for that.

Back before COVID a developer friend swore to me that by 2020 nobody was going to pay for a game that wasn't completely photorealistic at under 60fps and I looked him dead in the eye and said "Breath of the Wild." He's been mad at me ever since.

So, that^ is what I sit at doing a LOT of big shiat, on top of setting aside 4GB for read caching (gotta' keep around some spinning rust for a few things.) Sometimes that'll go up to like 45GB utilized under brief nightmare scenarios. The difference? I make game assets; maps, models, textures, that sort of thing. The only times a game's ever had the gall to require anywhere near that to run was when it wasn't a game, but a server for a game. I couldn't justify half of that on just a gamer-type load.

Yeah, 32GB's sorta' in the "cheap as water" range nowadays, at least when pricing stuff for a new build, but a lazy port like this is asking a lot of anyone not doing that. $60/70/80 (+$30 for the DLC season pass dontchaknow), and $100ish for 32GB of RAM that you may rarely justify after that game's time has passed? Fark that.

lol That is insane. I can understand if you're running a pro workstation but 64GB for a friggin' game or a personal computer is hard for me to wrap my head around. I only have 16GB on this laptop and I've never managed to use it all.

I've got 32 gig in my new mac mini but could use more.  I had to send the M1 back because it kept crashing for lack of ram.  This one has been up a whole 24 days this time without crashing and I'm not impressed with its track record.  I use windows not tabs for things that still allow it and I use virtual desktops for projects. I also use fast user switching for testing.  I'll have 3 to 6 desktops and each with maybe 20 windows open.  I'll Safari as well as two to three profiles of Firefox open as well as 20 or so terminal sessions open.  I basically use it like a pair of Blits with prettier online documentation.  I figure my mac uses about the same % of memory for video backing as a C64 did.  The more things change, the more they stay the same.

It has to be something horrendous like that.

The PS5 has 16GB of RAM. Is the developer claiming the PS5 is not meeting the recommended specs and isn't a good platform to play the game on?

Or maybe they decided not to figure out caching and they just load all of the game assets into memory at load time?

It really helps more if your rig is otherwise average (or crud.)  I have 64 in this one because it is low average - and at the time ram was cheap so why not.  It helps smooth out performance on marginally runnable games noticeably.  Doesn't replace a good GPU no, but I was getting like 15-20% better performance out of the marginal stuff than I used to with an equivalent GPU.  If you've already got burning edge shiat for a GPU/in the system otherwise?  You probably won't even notice barring stuff like the article.  If you aren't doing things like games that make your system work for it, or being an artist of some sort, you likely would never notice either way

Yeah - I know - WTF y tho?  That was my question when I was asking about building a low end system in some places and a few people reccomended it.  Reply was a shruggie and "It works though - since Windows 10 dumping stupid amounts of ram in actually helps a bit."  So I tried it - because last-gen Ram was like buy 1 get 3 free practically then.  And it did.  Whether it's modern OS architecture making use of the overage to ease bottlenecks or PFM I don't know, or care.  It's worked - and I can't argue with that

I rejoined the ranks of the dirt console peasants because of crap like this, and I don't want Windows touching any of my pc's.

Spend $2k on a video card every 2 years or so, or pay $600 for a console with an average lifetime of 5-7 years, almost 10 between generations.

But... but... That's not what of the sacred numbers, though. And... the things don't match in pairs. And... you're not asposed to do that!

This is wrong! This is heresy!
