This is where I live, my wife works at the EGF library and this absolutely tracks with some of the old coots living around here.

/a month ago a guy fired a shotgun off his apartment balcony at people walking a dog

Your goddamn right and if that kid doesn't like it he can just go get himself a gun and shoot at the squirrel.

They should take away his 2nd Amendment right and never give it back. They should give the wife a cash award for such a great zinger.

Mixing some cayenne pepper in wih the bird seed is a more effective approach to keep the squirrels out. Probably not as much fun for the gun guys though,

It was a .22, that would barely kill a child.

Real men would shoot a 30-06, much better penetration if you want to also get the parents and any potential pets with the same round.

Squirrel proof is like saying you have a secure work network.

There is always a bigger idiot, and always a way for squirrels to get to them.

The only way to stop squirrels from eating bird seed is to have armed security, or fence off the feeder and train finches to go through small holes.

My uncle used to pick them off with an air rifle. That was probably illegal too but a good bit less likely to go through someone's window.
Also a bit quieter.

As someone that has had this month over $200 in property damages from the little tree rats chewing shiat left and right I understand his frustration. However, don't use a gun at least not more than a BB gun and even still no with neighbors. Fine, and laws. The little shiats if you don't get them with the live trap will not fall for them after trying 2 or 3 times. I'm allowed to murder it if I trap it but god forbid if you used a glue trap or poison on the rat just because it lives in trees.

It's not just gramps!  I once walked into my grandparent's kitchen and they were sitting at the table with two pistols and a carbine like Bonnie and Clyde. They were CO2 BB guns and it was WAR on the squirrels!  I still think it's cool that my grandma (R.I.P. Gramps!) knows how to charge and load a variety of Crossman products.

We didn't bother with the "squirrel baffle" they sold at our local Wild Birds Unlim'td.
We did get the "Raccoon baffle". And that worked fine at stopping the squirrels too.

I've seen a raccoon get around them and going to town on a bird feeder. The owner pelted it with a pepper round and it ran off but he admitted it was only keep the "little farker" away for a week.

My other gramps (R.I.P) would bait live traps with peanut butter and haul the squirrels, hissing and scratching, to a nature preserve and release them.  We joked that it was the same squirrel that kept coming back.  Eh, it gave him something to do.  You CAN'T have squirrels eating the birdseed and Oriole oranges!

(grandparents', edit for my last post)

Honest answer, because it's stupid. Squirrels will nest where there is regular food source and sometimes that is prying into your roof and making nest in your blown insulation.

So I was in the Army with this country boy from Alabama. He told me this story about how he was in his trailer watching TV and a rat ran across the living room. He looked at his dog who just kinda glanced at the rat and said "meh" (or as close as a dog can) and decided if the dog wasn't going to fix the problem, he would.  He grabbed his 20 gauge and say back down to watch TV.

Sure enough the rat came walking by again, and he blasted it. Along with a new hole in the floor.
"And that is how my wife set a rule about no longer shooting guns in the house. "

There absolutely is, but you need a microwave oven transformer, a couple capacitors, and a complete disregard for electrical safety.

In a country with more guns as people, everything becomes "war" and all problems can be solved by shooting at them.

I have some very good squirrel proof feeders.   Every one of them has been destroyed by the racoons around here, so the extra amount of cost isn't really working out.

I have given to just leaving my Christmas stuff powered on all day. There isn't enough flowing through to cook them but once they bite into the hot they fark off and I can strip and mend the wire.

When I had squirrel issues a few apartments ago, I spent a significant amount of time researching whether they could be killed with a commercial blowgun.

(Youtube indicated yes, but I just moved instead.)

FTA: The man's wife said to him, "Well, I told you" as he was being arrested, police said.

That woman has to be so relieved that the crazy SOB will be locked up for a while. First, he attracts squirrels to his property. Then, he tries to kill the squirrels that he attracted. Worst of all, he risked killing a child and clearly does not give a damn because he is "at war" with the squirrels he attracted.

At best, this man is snorting bat guano. At worst, he's a psychopath ready and willing to recklessly kill a child. He needs to be involuntarily committed for a thorough mental health evaluation and possible long-term commitment to a mental health facility or, if the diagnosis warrants it, a facility for individuals with dementia.

Are you spreading peanut butter on your house? Stop killing the squirrels and fix what ever is attracting them or allowing them into a place where they can damage property.

What is it with old men and their obsession with squirrels?  My dad sets out 3-4 live traps and then takes the squirrels across town to a lake to release them. He does this every week and there is always the same number of squirrels in his yard.

Guess it gives him something to do.
