Because the marketing is more effective with a name.

It makes the story feel more personal if it refers to "Nishiat Parikh" than "the individual who wishes to remain anonymous".

It's gotten worse in the United States. Now only 66% of households own their own home.

Finally afford a house?   Finally?   Hes 30, finish college at 22, 24 for a masters, 2 to 3 years to get established and start making good money gives you 3 to 4 years saving the 20% required for a decent down payment so he's right on schedule for someone to buy a house.

Early even if he is early enough in his career that he may need to relocate or does not know where he wants to settle.

Well done subby, well done!

Making minimum wage in Ontario, with no debt, will currently convince a bank to loan you perhaps $190k.  A DINK couple twice that... which will actually get you a small condo apartment in a smaller city or a townhome with a hell of a commute to work.  The average outer suburban 'starter home' is around $320k.

Of course, the moment you want to have a car (you won't be able to afford a home near a mass transit node), or want to eat, or whatever, you're going to be in severe financial distress.  And you're going to fall behind in upkeep on that house.  And may God have mercy on your soul if you want kids.

But $55 million?  That's a house bigger than you need, closer to a downtown core than you need, in a 'nicer' neighborhood than you need, with an income fund set aside to maintain it all... and STILL having to figure out what you're going to do with the other $50 million.

I'd hire a finance lawyer to create a trust and collect it on the trusts behalf.

No way am I letting anyone know.
I'm going to get a slightly nicer house. A slightly nicer car, pay off my mom's house, set my goddaughter up for college, and fark everyone else.

I don't know that you even need the trust, you can just use the lawyer as a middleman.  But then again, I'd be able to afford a lawyer to tell me how to do that.

But I don't think you've quite figured out how much $55m is.  $2-3m gives you a middle class existence for life, without ever working again (unless you're under 30, then it might be $3-4m).  Everything beyond that is just wasted if it sits in the bank or if you buy things that cost money to maintain.

You invest it, and you do that by starting companies that do things you think need doing and have an interest in.  And with that kind of cash iat's not like you have to start with a 1-man team working out of your garage... you can have lawyers, managers, and hr staff ready to start up whatever you want for you.  And if it fails?  Try again.  A few million here, a few million there, and it'll still take decades for you to try all enough things to run out even if you're a complete and utter failure at everything you try.

And you'd still have that middle class for life money left over.

Try finding one in Oakville, a half-hour south of Toronto. Sold my mum's condo which wasn't much more than a large bachelor apartment for a quarter-mil almost ten years ago after she passed away. New buyer who had started the deal was scared shiatless I would break off the deal my mom had started and sell to the Arab guy who was desperate to find a place for his mom and get her the fark away from his house at least 12 hours a day and was ready to top that by 50-75 g's.

Yah but he's gotta pay off the student debts first, so 30 is when he'd _start_ saving for a down payment on a house.  If he landed a job in his field and didn't end up working for a tone-deaf boomer who's got no idea how much stuff costs these days.

I've been told that it's for transparency on the lotto's side, so people don't think the money was shuffled away somehow. I don't know if it's true, but that does make some amount of sense.

You need to rotate your map 90 degrees clockwise.  Oakville is a 30 minute trip to the west, not south.

South of Toronto is some of the wettest real estate in Ontario.

You need to pick up a map, my pedantic friend. Oakville is south-west almost exactly 225 degrees. And if someone is south-west of you, they are still sitting on a more southerly latitude.

The grid is aligned NW/SE as local 'north' in most of the GTA - more NNW/SSE in Toronto proper, but definitely NW/SE west of the 427, and that's how everyone who lives there treats it.  The lake isn't anything but 'south' until you're past Burlington.

You might have something of an argument in Mississauga or Oakville, but since Toronto itself IS on that NNW/SSE alignment, south remains Lake Ontario.  You can't go south from Toronto without a boat, whether you're choosing your directions by the compass or by local convention.

I've already explained to you exactly why nobody who lives in the area - or even the general region - would ever call it 'south'.  You don't like that... good for you?  Getting incredibly bent out of shape over a fact you don't like is not really a good look.
