The best thing about "Vampire Survivors" is that they hired James Stephanie Sterling to write the lore, so if you know that, when you read the wacky monster descriptions, you'll hear them in that voice.

The game's insistence on using low-resolution white Courier on colored backgrounds makes my eyes bleed, though. The UI has absolutely rotten visual design wrapped around James Stephanie Sterling's wit.

It's pretty awesome. I regret absolutely playing it in to the ground back when it first came out before they added a ton of stuff to it. Now I'm too burned out on it to enjoy any of the new stuff.

If I could go and give them more than 2 dollars for it I would.

/wonder if they have a paetreon.

Imagine if level 9 of "Robotron" had a million times as many enemies... and could be played with just one finger. So, it's pure over-the-top chaos with thousands of critters swarming you... while at the same time, being an easy game for babies. It's a fun way to relax trough overstimulation: While you watch your little sprite mowing down zillions of other little sprites (while eating tiramisu with your other hand.)

of the games i played this year, it's probably like
#7. Shin Megami Tensei 5
#3. the first half (?) of Disco Elysium before I got lost and gave up
#1. Shredder's Revenge until the 9th time my kids played it
#11. Xenoblade 3 if I skip every single bit of the story

The game's so very very Italian that even after J S Sterling wrote the English text for it, it still has a sort of "Viva Variety" vibe to it.

So now I know that an authentic Italian meal consists of tiramisu and several floor chickens.

Speaking of $70 video games, am I crazy to think that their price have generally not followed general inflation since the early days of 8 bit computers, that they have in fact gotten cheaper when inflation is accounted for.

I'm sure that Elite on floppy disk for my Commodore 64 cost me $50 Canadian back then, but it's not unlikely that my memory is faulty. Adjusted for inflation that would me more than $70 U.S. now.

Basically, you run around auto-attacking monsters, acquiring power-ups.  The monsters get harder every minute (literally on-the-minute the monster spawns change).  The challenge is to survive 30 minutes.

I haven't played any since the first one but I thought it was plenty of fun. I'm sure there were other games out there like it but it is the first one I ran into where you could do a lot of things with physics and interacting with objects in the game.

The story is obnoxious to the point that even brain-shutdown doesn't quite cover it.  It's not quite Borderlands 3 level crap, but it isn't good either.  One of the key parts of earlier Far Cry games was they actually tried to make decent drama.  Even with the voice acting they have it was all very meh to me, wasn't at all engaged in the characters

I liked Farcry 5, played around 30 hours but didn't finish.  But 6 feels off, maybe stale because it's the same gameplay as 5? Just doesn't hook me.  I think it's because 5 felt like a new environment whereas 6 is just another Carribbean island tinpot dictator playground.  Yeah, we're fighting for freedom, blah blah blah.

Prices dropped slightly when CDs were introduced. Then DVDs, and then Blu-ray. But they pretty much stayed $50 - $60 through those three storage transitions.

You also have smartphones that are basically PS2s, but degrade in "value" after 2 years like a Trailer Home. A $1000 piece of equipment becomes $200 in 2 years. I wish consoles depreciated that fast. So we know the markup for them.

Economy of scale, and cheaper manufacturing, it makes sense that entertainment is "cheaper" especially as that content is basically distributed via server instead of truck and CD/DVD. Acquiring games is basically a $1 fee, maybe even cents. The bulk comes from margins and cost to pay the developers.

Also, record profits, etc etc.

But at the same time, the cost of making a video game has ballooned. Many Atari games were created by a single programmer over a span of a few months.  The main cost was the physical cartridge and packaging.

Most AAA games today involve thousands of people and 3+ years of work.  And yet the price is less, adjusted for inflation.  There are more customers, but the playerbase is also pretty segmented.  Distribution is cheaper and easier, but costs are so much higher than they used to be.

It's honestly surprising that big video games have stayed as cheap as long as they have.

Elite was an unusually expensive game for its time. According to Zzap 64, it was £15 on cassette and £18 on disk. That's £43.67 and £52.53 in today's money, which still works out to less than US$70 for the more expensive disk. A typical full priced game on cassette was between £8 and £10 at the time, or between £23.29 and £29.14 today accounting for inflation. Disk games were less common and usually sold for £15.

It is one of the only games I can think of where walking away from it is better than completing it.

4's the same way.  It's a surprisingly realistic outcome, practically a deconstruction of "the hero gets in the middle of a civil war he knows absolutely nothing about." The dictator's a monster, but he clearly has no beef with you in particular, and that doesn't automatically make the resistance good people.

5 got worse with New Dawn.

Your reward for finishing a long game? Your character getting abused, tortured and brainwashed.

And it is the Canon ending.
