US Congress would split along party lines and serve only to solidify the voter base.   Even the smartest Republicans know better than to appear smart in public.

Everyone is government should do good in the language sections. Maths i can forgive easily. Beyond some basic algebra or statistics, i think most adults retain trig, algebra 2, etc...

Oh lawd, if we're gonna do this in the US, I humbly request that we test strongly on the Constitution since some of Congress can't seem to know what it says lol.

Doesn't matter what the constitution says, that's what the ScRotus is for. It's whatever they imagine the constitution to be.

That and they're openly calling for it to be canceled anyway...

Was that test really needed to determine their limited capacities? I don't think so. Speaking in a posh voice seems to be enough for British voters to believe these pricks are better than them. They may all have gone to fancy private schools, but was that all on merit or because their parents could afford it? And a high level of education isn't correlated with intelligence or integrity. You can skip school entirely and still have a solid understanding of what's good for your country while those from Eton are only driven to preserve their own status.
UK politicians - to the highest part Tories - have taken wrong decisions at every chance they got. That they are utterly stupid can be read daily in every newspaper.
And 5th graders have their cognitive development ahead of them. Why not let them run the country?

I always tell people that when they talk about how the younger generation are such stupid people, that they have to know more, are under more pressure, have a lower dropout rate than our generation as well as have to be computer literate and the list goes on.  The world has changed.  Either change with it or sit there and tell everyone how dumb everyone else is.

...that is all...

Oh come on. Unless adults have a photographic memory, of course kids would best them in trivia contests of what's learned at that age....

Well that explains Brexit.

No fair testing them in English. That is cultural bias. Test should be in their local language.

This is not high scool maths.  This is the level of maths that the current government insisted had to taught to 11 year olds.

The expectation is that every child without a learning disability of some kind would pass.

/they are a complete waste of time since every teacher of that age group knows exactly what grade the students will get before they even sit the test.

Oh, do the Brits expect the kids with learning disabilities to all fail?
I thought maybe that mindset was limited to old white folks in my school district. ;-)

/saving the whole rant about that for a time where it's more topical

No we expect them to do as well as they can with all the support we can provide them.  But some children, even with support, will not succeed in a standardised test.

I can certainly agree with "some."  (Particularly in cases profound enough that they have to go to special schools.). As long as there isn't some broad expectation that among schools attended by the general public, those with more disabled or high-needs students (and/or more minorities, English-as-a-second-language and still-learning-English students) are going to have poor average performance.

My kids attend a public (in the US sense, free) primary school where 14% of students have disabilities, 42% have high needs, 36% didn't have English as a first language, 15% are still learning English, and 74% are non-white.  It's also one of the best-performing primary schools in the district, which in turn is one of the best-performing districts in the state, and this year was named an "Exemplary High-Performing School" on the National Blue Ribbon Schools list by the national department of education.

Simply because the school gives the kids, as you put it, "all the support we can provide them."  Need to learn English?  Oh look, there are specialists who will work on that with you.  Need help with some other subject?  Same.  Behavioral issues?  On a spectrum?  Etc etc?  We will find a way.

My gripe is not at all with like-minded folks like you, but with the aforementioned old white people in my district who think "oh no, just look at all these little brown children speaking weird languages and acting strangely - whatever will happen to our standardized test scores?!" failing to realize that at least around here, those children are an upward influence on the averages. :)
