This is symbolic. DOJ already has a grand jury convened.

This is the committee looking to pile on and take some political credit, which is bad news for the 5 people listed. You know how the first rule of Lawyer Club is "never ask a question in court you don't already know the answer to?" This is that, but with indictments. Adam Schiff, for one, is not exactly a stupid lawyer, in other words.

Pretty much this.  For many MANY years now, we've been hearing about how something's gonna happen.

Is now the time that it might?  Maybe.  But I'm not investing any energy in it.

Because I suspect that the criminal referrals will all amount to low-level people that won't mean a thing, but they'' frame it to be a HUGE deal.

OR

If they actually DO follow through with indictments, they will only be for the lowest people.

I've been informed by many on fark who thing I'm a raging Eeyore that the J6C only matters as the dog and pony show while the DOJ has already been wrapping this up, and thus these referrals would be meaningless anyway.

The populace has to be gradually prepared to accept the indictment of a man they once worshipped - and many continue to. The case has been built slowly in part to cook the frog. Had he been indicted 8/8, there would have been riots.

The last election results are in, Trump's being broadly written up as a personal, business, and political loser, and the blows are landing.

I haven't seen a trump t shirt or bumper sticker in months.

Now's the time to do it. Let's go, Garland.

You've got a weird notion about, well, life.

Nothing CAN happen that would "deter another coup attempt," because we live in a democracy and an open society.  What you want to happen cannot happen in America, because to "deter a coup" requires things like public executions, brutal torture, arrests of entire families and detention without trial, "reeducation" camps, and other things that just don't happen here.

So no, nothing has happened to deter another coup attempt because we don't live in an authoritarian dictatorship. You're deluded if you think things like harsher prison terms in the kind of prisons America has would "deter" anything except harsher coup attempts. To really prevent another Jan 6 from happening again, the intelligence community needs to take white supremacist extremist groups seriously; but that's an entirely different conversation. It has nothing to do with penalties to the groups members.
