architects put a lot more into a blueprint than you know. by far. the engineer came up with a pipe will have his drawing followed for years to come. each building is new for the architect, right down to the conduit that the wire runs in and lots more.

I can point to more than an 80% discrepancy between the bridging design of my project and the DIFCs, rfdcs, rfi's, and more than 40k submittals/ reviews. They didn't even get the columns/ beams correct.

Design/build contracts the architect doesn't do sh*t.

BU's got plenty of traditional-type academic architecture as well as the gorgeous suite of its original neogothic limestone buildings. The stack of books there is a nice modern change of pace.

It looks like they asked a Brutalist to do his best imitation of post-modern in response to MIT's Gehry-designed Stata Center.

It's at least interesting to look at, and if they had some fun and used glass floors on the overhangs it might even be neat to work in.

Say what you will about Gehry, but I find the Disney Concert Hall in LA to be absolutely gorgeous inside & out. From the outside it almost feels like music to me, and thus seems very appropriate to its purpose.

Oh, for God's sake...I went to UMass/Amherst. It's a few nice buildings, surrounded by masses of poured concrete. You know what Brutalist buildings do? They leak.  A lot.

And then, of course, there's the Library. 22(?) stories of brick-faced poured concrete. Brutalist on the inside and inadequately secured brick facing on the outside. Because, as I'm sure you anticipated, the builders cheaped out on the attachment of the facing, which periodically detaches, thus the plywood walkways.

Good school though, decent education for not much money when I went there. It's probably unaffordable now.

"The building buys its electricity from a wind farm in South Dakota."

No, it does not. The line loss between South Dakota and Boston would reduce the current to zero. This is why we don't have just one gigantic generating plant in the midwest.

This is a 'green' fallacy. The electrons this building uses are generated in New England or Canada using conventional forms of energy production.

That's physics kids. Disagreeing won't change it.

Behind all the BS verbiage, schools & governments liked & embraced brutalism because it was cheap. It never mattered that people hated it. There literally had to be an uprising against it to get them to stop.

Technically correct (the best kind!) but...

Consider the daily amount of electricity consumed in the US. For each watt we buy from a green source one watt is NOT bought from a fossil source.

It doesn't matter where the electrons come from. What's important is where the money goes.
