Trains don't turn. The handle is a T shape for acceleration or braking. Also it's japan. Gotta have the uniforms. but other than that, yeah that's pretty much what it probably does look like

Osaka was as surprised as anyone when she got the contract and was disappointed when her first proposal, dressing up Chiyo-Chan in a giant Subway Car costume, was rejected.

I rode at least one Osaka subway car that was bizarre. The styling was ancient - like that you would see in fancy early 1900's Japan buildings. It was also spotless to the point where it looked brand new.

It has to do double duty and also turn on the heat when it's cold

You would think this wasn't major news, but sadly it is. Many of the older trains in Japan are have basically 'on' and 'off' for both heating and cooling, and to make matters worse, it used to be done by DATE not TEMPERATURE.  Once 'winter' started, the heat was on. Period. Yes, that means that a hot day that was technically 'in the winter' meant sweltering tropical heat inside the train. Things have improved with the newer trains (like adjustments based on capacity, frequency of door opening, etc.), so this is good news.

I can live without heat in winter on public transit. I dress for the weather. Being from Illinois, I own a Professional™ parka.

Seriously though, there aren't any aerodynamics involved. Why not make them snakes, centipedes, worms, tentacles, etc? Every train on the same line is a theme of the same animal. All the cars follow suit. You want to know how to get to Roppongi? Take the snake then get on the centipede towards city center.

Meanwhile, Americans continue to drive, stop, drive for an hour to commute 20 miles.

This metro area now has traffic jams on Saturday and Sunday as well as the weekdays.
