Doesn't live in the southwest obviously.

Approximately 100% of wild bee colonies in Arizona are now Africanized.   Opening an Africanized hive like that without a suit is suicide.

She's from Texas, so Southwest enough.  Not everything there is super-swarming Africanized bell-end bees.  And she seems to know her shiat.

Yeah. Thought I had seen that before.  She's got other similar videos. Amazing how some folks are just unbothered by bees. As a bee keeper I wear a veil in case something goes really sideways but go bare handed for most of the season.  But sometimes it's tough not to crush or threaten one and you get stung.   It's usually when I'm rushing.

I complained to Drew about that and his response was along the lines that we're not even a drop in the bucket for their traffic, and that mods will change links sometimes to a better site.
This kind of thing sort of undermines his statement, though, since it's apparently a year old and was already greenlit once.

Texas is well within their range.  I don't know how she got away with that one, maybe she somehow knew that colony wasn't aggressive.  Not all of them are.

I have a massive walnut tree that is dying and losing branches. But the trunk has a huge hollow knot hole and is a massive bee hive. I will probably end up calling UT Ag for some help in figuring out how to move them so I can take the tree down. I can go out to the tree and look into the hole with no problems. But when I mow around it, they get cranky from the sound and vibration of the mower.

That silver funnel thingy in the beginning of the clip is a hive smoker, smoke calms the bees down. No idea how she does it without a suit and gloves...

I've worked bees many a time in shirt sleeves and jeans. But I wouldn't have worked them with loose hair like that. The workers get caught in it and get all stingy. Braid that mop.

I also used a spray bottle with sugar water and a bit of menthol instead of a smoker. Calms the bees as they clean themselves, and the menthol helps control tracheal mites.

I miss my bee yard. ._.

The money Twitter likely made off the traffic we sent to this is at -most- $5, probably less as I don't see ads on the landing page for this.  YMMV

If someone finds the original tiktok post I'll gladly swap it out.  Holler

Thing is they're all Africanized now, and although not all of those colonies are aggressive most of them are.

I have never seen anyone work an Africanize hive barehanded.

I would put it on the same danger level as handling a rattlesnake on a warm afternoon without controlling the head.  There are probably some snake whisperers who could get away with it.

And sprays sugar water over them.

Bees see sugar / nectar / honey the way we see money.   They get distracted and start collecting it instead of attacking.

I raised bees with my dad when I was very young. We did several rescues, this isn't anywhere close to what Steve Irwin was doing. Depending on the species of bees, they are very docile. Bee's die if they sting, so they only do it if absolutely necessary. If these bees were africanised, there would have been a tragic story long before she was called to address them. Someone using a mower 20 yards away would have been attacked. Whatever mechanism regulates the attack response is broken in africanised bee colonies. My dad liked Midnight bees, because they were very chill. I wore gear, but I was 9 or 10, so it was responsible of him to protect me. Of course I got stung as does the bee keeper in this story. She is very, very good at this. I would bet money she has gear to protect when she needs it. What she is doing is important, and I am thankful for her passion.

Depends - you can get cranky bees.  Just depends, some are chill as hell, some admire their thinner cousins and strive to emulate them

Well yeah, there's no way you get enough experience to manage what she did there without understanding that sometimes you need the gear.  You'd be dead by then if you hadn't figured that one out
