I used to go to the local dive after work often, sip some Jameson, drink a beer, and do the crossword puzzle. Made some friends, had some good conversation.

But not since covid. The negative, no more crosswords or dive bar interactions. The positive, I don't drink liquor anymore and that saves quite a bit, plus no covid. I can still do crosswords at home, but it's not the same without some drunken help.

imma smack the hand that puts another non-letter into a crossword.  ampersand don't go in the crossword.  hyphen do NOT get its own square in the crossword.  that's not cute.  it is the destruction of civilization and all we hold dear.
rebuses are bad enough

I know what you're thinking, and I hope it's not also for 17 Across.

FTFA : "A crossword puzzle is a diagram of white and black squares with a list of numbered clues, running across and down the grid. The black squares are blank fillers, while the white squares are for the answers for the clues."

....and ???
.... and ???

and the crossword pattern has to be diagonally symmetrical (or whatever that is called).
If you don't see and appreciate that, I think you're missing a lot of the cruciverbalists art/skill.
