My wife moved her bags of bird food from the basement to the screened porch because that was closer to the feeders. The next morning after we let the cats out on the porch, we were suddenly treated to the Squirrel-a-Whirl.  Squirrels had chewed through the screen door to get to bird food. The presence of the cats panicked the squirrels who were now racing counterclockwise around the room, up the screens and down, because they'd forgotten where they came in. We went out on the porch and it was like a maelstrom. If we opened the screen door that opened out to the wide world, the cats might bolt with the squirrels. If we picked up the cats we might be shredded by the terrified-but-fascinated cats. Eventually one of us played traffic cop and waved the cats to the end of the porch away from the door and the other opened the door and stood back. The squirrels did not immediately find the door-sized hole to freedom and for 30 seconds or so we all stood in this weird frenzied, cloud chamber kind of world. The dark cat sat there and her head bobbed up and down while the other was as motionless as a cement garden gnome. I just added it to the list of things that happen to me that I've never heard happen before.

Later, all we had to the patch the door was that packing tape with threads in it. But we moved the bird food.
