This whole Web2.0 nonsense is crashing down anyway. Advertising is the first thing to get cut when a deteriorating topline erodes margins in a real company with actual products. The pullback in ads will hurt the web companies, which will reduce hosting demand, which will eventually trickle to AWS. And AWS is under fire too from their enterprise customers: the past couple places I've been saw AWS as the fastest growing cost - hosting costs actually grow faster on AWS, and it's pissing off the C suite. Turns out "Teh cloudz" is just someone else's datacenter, and they still cost money, lol.

The unintended by product of AWS migration is that it makes it easier for tech to spend. The comparison I like to use is going to the movies vs on demand at home. Back in the day, kids would ask for $20 to go to a movie. "What movie are you going to see? Are you buying popcorn and soda? Etc...here's $12". Compare that to on demand, click a button and get a bill. No controls. That's what AWS is like for your dev team. That's going to stop, and it will hurt Amazon and the entire Web2.0 farce.

So Insta / Twitter can do what they want - it's over.

The Kids are into TicTok now anyway, and it will be something else in 5 years.

Zuck is a sociopath but is generally competent to run a company and musk really needs at least a year of mental health days away from all businesses and electronic devices so the lesser of two evils is less evil, go zuck I guess.

Does anyone care?  It's like arguing over which turdburger you'd rather eat.

The problem with Meta investing heavily in new functionality is that they have already set enormously huge piles of ca$h on fire to build the "metaverse". I doubt shareholders will have the stomach to back another huge investment at this time, even if Twitter is currently on the ropes and spitting blood with both eyes swollen shut.

It would be difficult.  My Twitter feed is mostly political news and Instagram is all images. If you drop the images and go to text based the reason why people use it now will be gone. If you stick with images I don't see Seth Abramson posting a 100 images explaining why Trump broke the law.

Leaving Twitter for Instagram is like fleeing Saudi Arabia for Iran.

The comments on articles on FB are filled with anti-Biden bot accounts and fake likes anyway so it already kinda is.

What would "competing with twitter" even mean now?  A race to bankruptcy?  A challenge to see who can keep a money-losing company running the longest before the debt catches up?  Who can fire the most people?

It's really not about a willful screwing over, but maintaining market dominance.  If Fa.  If Meta can shift Instagram just a little and support it further, I suppose it could appear as a direct competitor if not a superior competitor.  They'd be using a platform they already have that is popular and is similarly focused largely on selfishness, it could work.

I think it's more likely though that whatever may come along and sideline the major players will happen somewhat organically.  It'll be simple, useful, and it won't be the other guys.  A wildfire starts, and it's on.  They'll leave Friendster for MySpace for Facebook, so to speak.  That seems to be the way it has been, they try hard to control it.

No. Zuck won't ever allow posts to be shown without an algo deciding what first in your feed.

Zuck can just add the ability to post text. You can already post vids and pics. They'd have to limit the characters to avoid it being a wall of extremely tiny text and users would likely have to scroll sideways to read more (like twitter's multiple posts which is IMO horrible to read and track). It'd be a little clunky, but it should be otherwise doable. One of the twitter replacements (Hive I think?) does this exact thing.
