I have one of those battery-powered joysticks with a bunch of games preloaded that I bought just for Yar's Revenge. Still pretty good at it.

I'm having flashbacks...

In the early 80s I had an Atari 800 computer.  I spent one night typing in hexadecimal code from a magazine for a game that was basically a clone of Tempest.  Took several hours to type it in, then another hour fixing typos, but I got to play for about an hour, then went to bed.  Woke up the next morning to see that the cassette tape drive hadn't saved the game.  Ah, those were the days

Lol - I was lucky enough to escape the scourge of tape drives - my first system was a C64 at 13, and that was the year they released the 1541 floppy drive just the year before.  I even got dual drives - fancy!

/man I played a lot of Beach Head 2

baron von doodle: Llamasoft is a great game company name.

Jeff Minter is an actual proper tech-genius. Unlike some twitt, er.. CEO of an electric car company.

The fact that his games have seriously in-depth mechanics is often overlooked because of his 'wacky' choice of sprites.

Tempest 3000 was one of the best vector-driven games ever. Llamatron was about as addictive a game as I'd ever played at the time, but was relatively unknown by most of my peers.

I actually look forward to this new release - Minter was miles ahead of his time.

Arra Arrh is about what I'd call Arkanoid once I discovered how well liquor and arcades went together.

From what I can tell of the new Atari, they sell merch and nostalgia with the infrequent mention of an actual game now and then. You're better off ignoring them completely

That was a couple of years ago and no question, they absolutely sucked.  Right now, though, the company has made a concerted effort to revive its catalog with overall positive results.  I'm not saying the Centipede/Breakout/Yars/Etc Recharged games are great but they're certainly playable, and Atari 50 was very well received.  They've been putting in the work lately, which is a good change from how new-Atari started several years back.

Also worth a mention that Akka Arrh is nothing like Tempest.  Can't wait to see the Llamasoft take on it.

It reminds me of Geometry Wars, which is good. However, this game looks more simplistic, which is bad. The visuals are colorful and interesting, which is good. It also seems hard to follow what's going on on screen, which is bad.

It will all come down to whether the game contains any potassium benzoate.

I had Raiders of the Lost Ark and couldn't even figure out what the hell I was supposed to do.

For me, it wasn't so much that it was hard, it was just a complete mystery. I don't know how other people figured out what to do.

I don't know if you showed me a screenshot of geometry wars at first I wouldn't have known what the make of it. (The fact that it was in project gotham racing made it even better)

And looks like there's some pretty basic mechanics I can go pretty deep in the game It looks kind of fun we'll see how it is it's on all platforms.

Llamatron was and still is an awesome game. Absolutely addictive. One of the many reasons I still run an Amiga emulator.  Simply stunning and a big screen TV.

User name checks out apparently.  There's a DOS remake called Lllamatron 2112 - no idea how it is but it exists.  Found it for a friend one day that was looking:  Llamatron 2112 at Abandonware
