Good. I hope to see stories like this out of several more states, with a few of them going on to become CongressCritters by the end of the decade.

It's Arkansas, they're probably at least 10 years behind in fashion. We're at least 5 here in PA.

He will eventually leave Arkansas for more tolerant pastures. I left Oklahoma in 93 and lived in many places and traveled to other countries. When I came back home, 4 years later, the once progressive state I knew, was gone. It farking vanished, at least that's what I believe and still feel. The truth might be is that I was a visitor of the world and I was the one who changed. When I came home, I saw the ugliness and rot in my state. Maybe it was there all along, but this state was created by people that already lived here or lived here, the indigenous, and people looking to work hard for a new beginning. I'm from family that pioneered this land and I wish I could live somewhere else. I hate it here but all of my family is here, and most of them lean liberal, my parents being among them. I hope this young man influences an entire generation. I'm rooting for him.

It was a set up.

You give an 18 year old the power to make financial decisions on that scale, without oversight or discussion?

Qui bono? Who benefitted from having Ben take the fall? Was the town in such dire straits that they decided to pin the blame on a teenager?

It ain't much of a town anymore. Kind of a Dollar General next door to Family Dollar town. Good luck young man. It is kind of close to Memphis, so there is someplace to go when the thrills of the NAPA autoparts store and the segregated funeral homes dim.

This was pretty much confirmed in the episode where Ben and Leslie go back to his hometown under the pretense that Ben was to receive a "key to the city" from the current mayor (J.K.Simmons) who later openly admits the only reason why he invited Ben back was to scapegoat him to distract from his own failings.

One great thing about that show is that it got better as it got older.  I think the last 4 or 5 episodes are among the best TV ever.  Mayor Gunderson's funeral:

Yep, Bill Murray is the dead mayor.

Good luck to the young man.

Frankfort, Indiana, after cashiering a Republican for a Libertarian, voted for Chris McBarnes, a conservative Republican, at the age of 23.  The city improved visibly on his watch, fixed its infrastructure and improved relationships between the police and the community.  Industry responded very positively -- and this is industry that is either union or pays union wages.
