I farking hate it so much.  The animation during play, how the digital board ads are are only for one camera angle so everything looks different from another angle.

They already have ads on the plexiglass

How long until all of the plexiglass is covered?

People watching at home don't need to see the audience, right? Might as well put ads everywhere except the rink

The first time I watched a game with this, not knowing it was a thing, I was mightily confused, because the ads were targeted at the audience of the broadcast (in this case, the Detroit area), especially the ads superimposed on the ice surface. With the sound of the crowd clearly cheering for the other team, it took me some time to realize the Red Wings were playing on the road and that the ice ads were not physically present.

I then became sidetracked with the question of whether it meant the boards were just blank white in person now; quick camera angles from lower angles showed that no, the local ads are still there. I was bummed out a bit because I do enjoy seeing local ads for places that I've never been, and now that is being denied.

This was an issue last year too.

And Leah Hextall is terrible.

It always amused me seeing ads for a, say, chiropractor in Winnipeg or a funeral parlor in AZ getting national exposure.

But alas, the almighty marketing dollar is going to overrule everything else.

Also, this whole thing makes me more and more whistful for the days when the boards were completely uncluttered and the only thing on the ice (besides the lines) was a team logo and the occasional "Season's Greetings".

They'll make it almost but not quite intolerable and then offer an ad-free premium stream for extra $$

I thought Leah was good when she guest hosted Hockey at Noon. Cute, could talk hockey. Unfortunately she is a Hextall and that is a stain never washing away. Is her play by play really that bad? I she worse than Kenny Albert?

Yes, for the simple reason that she mails it in sometimes

Maybe ESPN can find a way to triple monetize it now

Oh. Wait.

I used to work for a company that did all the boards at an NHL rink. When I left they were starting to pivot from just printing to digital signage too, guessing they've got nothing to do with this and no one I worked with is still there or I'd ask.

I don't know about you but watching up to three player simultaneously vanish then reappear ten feet away is pretty compelling.

If you don't mind her calling out the wrong player or even the wrong team that just scored, no she's quite good...(we'll just ignore that time that she thought that the other team scored in a shootout & was wondering why the (real winning) team was coming out onto the ice to see their goalie)

She 'might', with a few years of experience calling minor league games (tv or radio) be good enough for the NHL eventually.  However ESPN went with 'she's female, we need at least one of those' & 'she's got a famous hockey name' to give her her job.  And it's a horrible disservice to her that they did so.

She 'is' intelligent & knows a decent amount about hockey, but she was tossed way out into the deep end & she's just not up to it.  Those times that they have her in Pierre's old spot between the benches, she's been great.  She would also make a decent studio host, the next Kathryn as it were.  But as a play by play person, she just isn't up to it yet.  Unfortunately it's us who have to suffer while she learns the trade.

The NHL has its collective head so far up its ass you'd think it'd be able to measure eye strain perfectly.

She's pretty terrible.  The thing that bugs me the most is that she isn't good with getting the player's names right.  She'll mis-pronounce names or just out and out get it wrong.  It really grates my nerves.  She's doing play-by-play, that is her job to tell the viewers the correct names of the players!   NFL announcers memorize and have a system to remind them of the names of over 100 players and coaches each game.  She's only got about 50.  She should get the names right.

I actually don't mind her. I like the voice, other than the synthetic enthusiasm on dramatic plays. But I do agree, as the ice-side commentator she is better than a lot of the people doing it

I don't think it is synthetic.  I think she truly enjoys the game.  Her enthusiasm is probably my favorite characteristic of hers.

She's sincerely having fun here

Yeah, I have to agree. I find it incredibly distracting. At times I find myself following the wrong action because I've had 40 years to learn to watch hockey and it screws up the movement pattern for me

Yeah, faulty description on my part because I agree with you. There are some play-by-play people with whom their voice escalation feels forced as if that's a requirement, not because they aren't enthused, but really because that isn't their natural manifestation of being enthused. Gary Thorne always struck me that way too. Whereas Doc Emrick did not.

There's a reason I haven't been in any Pens game threads this season.

Not sure what it says about me, but I barely notice them during play.  Guess I'm weird like that.

I don't even notice them. Maybe it's because I'm watching the game not trying to search for something to biatch about on Twitter.
