Uber said it plans on launching a fully driverless service with Motional in 2023.

It won't.

2017:  Having recently announced plans to start testing its flying taxi service in Dubai and Dallas in 2020, Uber has also now added Los Angeles to that list. It is now also referring to the service as UberAir and imagines passengers hailing its flying taxis with a push of a button and traveling along fixed routes between city hubs called Skyports.

If my choices on who is driving the other cars around me are between a computer and a random human, I'll take the computer because the random human might be eating, drinking, smoking, puking, having a heart attack, half asleep, fully asleep, dead, mostly dead, drunk, high, stoned, putting on makeup, putting on a sweater, playing with the stereo, playing with the nav system, playing with their phone, playing with themselves, yelling at the kids in the back seat, yelling at the dog in their lap, whistling at the pretty girls on the sidewalk, and/or simply too stupid to drive a motor vehicle safely.

I think there are just too many potential variables for full self-driving vehicles to be viable on anything other than a very fixed route with standard everything and no pedestrians. And at that point, might as well take a train or plane, not automobile.

I rode with someone a few weeks ago who has a Cadillac equipped with their version of sort-of self driving. it's a neat gimmick to take your hands off the wheel and just let the car drive down the interstate. And I stress, interstate. Because it won't work just about anywhere else. And even then, it will flip-out if you take your hands off the wheel for more than a short period of time.

We have a LONG way to go.

The human will at least care if they get involved in an accident.

The computer won't.

You can program the computer to care.

I assume the scary part is that Uber is running it, because humans have no business behind the wheel of a car. It doesn't have to be perfect, just safer than a human driver, and that is a very low bar.

It still won't care.
